“I knew what I had to do, ’cause I had never struggled in the classroom,” Sakima Walker said while she was dealing with a sudden change after moving to Rutgers after high school. “But I wasn’t in a good mental space.” And so she left Rutgers behind, stepping into something new, where she did not let her past define her.

But it was required. “It was tough,” her mother, Nakia Johnson, recalled. “I really didn’t know what was going on with her at the time. When she first went to college I told them she was depressed because of COVID. You know, I’d seen that took a toll on her and I let them know. But I guess because Sakima always wears that smile they didn’t know because she didn’t talk about it and she just always appeared to be happy.”

Balancing studies – seven classes a day- and her game (first love), Sakima Walker led the Northwest Florida State College Raiders team to a JUCO national championship. “It gave me a fresh start… I was able to get that family feel and the support I felt I needed.” Sakima mentioned looking back at her JUCO season.
