Ever since Paige Bueckers left UConn, the team has been trying to find its next big three alongside Azzi Fudd and Strong. But no one could’ve expected it would be former Wisconsin star, Serah Williams. Last season she played and started 30 games, and has scored 577 points, averaging 19.2, her best in 3 years. Her dominance throughout her first three years of college is well known (1494 points!), but ever since her transfer, she’s been unstoppable, and it is as if even Geno’s got nothing but praise.

“She’s pretty intense,” the UConn HC said after the exhibition. And Serah pretty much deserved it for her 15 points in 17 minutes of gameplay against the Eagles. But of course, she isn’t limited to the court, so let us find out more about her!

Where is Serah Williams from?

Serah’s a New Yorker. She was born and raised in Brooklyn, a city popular for its Afropunk festivals held every summer at Commodore Barry Park. But her stay in the city was temporary, as she soon moved to Toronto for high school. On her move to Canada, Williams once said, “It was hard,… Like, I think what helped is that we did move as a family, so we had each other, but like, the area was new, and obviously, the people and the culture up here were different. So, it was a pretty, like, difficult adjustment.”

And while she doesn’t consider herself Canadian, of course, as she holds American citizenship, it was in Canada where her game first drew high-level attention. And that’s exactly how she got into Wisconsin.

Soon, she became a force for the Badgers, but despite serving for about three years, the program often found itself stuck in the bottom half of the table for most of the season. So, one of the most productive players in the country decided to enter the transfer portal.

“Thank you, Coach Mo and coaching staff, for the past 3 years. Thank you, Wisconsin, and the Badger community, for all of your support. I’m superblessed and grateful. With that being said, I’ve decided to enter the transfer portal 🤍❤️,” she penned in her announcement. Averaging 19.2 points with 9.8 rebounds per game as a junior at Wisconsin, she received plenty of strong offers.

But she chose UConn over LSU to support the reigning national champions. Wisconsin was great for Williams, but everyone knew she was destined for more. She entered the transfer portal seeking a program where she could chase championships and grow as a player. But do you know who she really is?

What is Serah Williams’ ethnicity and nationality?

Serah Williams is African American. She was born in the United States but later moved to Canada to attend high school. While she prefers to keep her personal life private, she revealed a lot during a recent episode of the Fudd Around podcast.

One of the facts she shared was about her ethnicity. “My family is Nigerian,” she said when Azzi asked about her roots. “Yes, my mom is Yoruba—full blood, full-blown Yoruba,” she added. While she has strong cultural ties to the Yoruba community, an African ethnic group, she does not practice Ifa or Orisha worship.

Is Serah Williams Christian?

Williams is one of those Nigerians who have adopted Christianity as their faith. But for her, it’s more than just a religion. Having grown up in the church, she’s always felt connected to God. “I grew up in the church, and ever since I was young, I was always just drawn to God,” she shared on the podcast.

“I was just interested in the amazing wonders that, you know, they teach in the church and that you’re reading in the Bible. Obviously, I’ve been through a lot of changes in my life so far, and just having the faith to get through certain challenges,” she added.

And yes, sometimes faith means strength, and in Williams’s life, her ability to overcome every obstacle comes from her belief in God. But will she be able to fulfill the last wish she has before graduation? Maybe. She’s got experience, she’s transferred, and she’s sharpening her skills. The only thing left is getting that title!
