Kelly was raised in San Antonio, Texas by her single mother Theresa Nunn. Kelly’s love for basketball is also thanks to her parents. Theresa Nunn played for Valley City State University. Kelly’s father Darren Kelly played at the University of Texas. “I had to sacrifice a lot,” her mother told The Daily Tar Heel. “And she was always very aware of that. So I think it almost made her work harder because, for both of my kids, I put whatever I wanted on hold to make sure that they had everything that they needed to be successful.”

Kelly has been in love with basketball since the age of 5. She was originally trained by her mother and started playing varsity basketball at Lady Bird Johnson High School in San Antonio. Later, she transferred to Duncanville High School, for better opportunities. Like her father, she accepted an offer from his alma mater Texas in seventh grade. But she received better offers from Duke and Minnesota and in 2019 she committed to North Carolina.
