Many ups and downs and unwanted turns in the basketball circuit were witnessed this year. At the heart of these encounters, the coaches stood out as a big trigger party. Despite drawing bile and bitterness, these exemplary gurus of basketball remain the guiding light.

To honor these kingmakers, the Atlanta Tipoff Club votes for the Naismith College Coach of the Year of the men’s college basketball league. And as this year comes closer to its end, it is only fair to enlist the top five coaches of the year 2023.

Earlier, the Naismith Awards were given to the coaches whose teams won the tournaments. However, the voting committee soon realized that a great coach is not defined by their wins and losses but by what they offer to a team. Following the same condition, the top ranking coaches of the year are listed ahead. The 46-year-old Shaka Smart of the Marquette Golden Eagles is one of them. He changed his team into a dynamic unit that performed their best in a decade. While their journey in the NCAA tournaments came to an early end, they did become the Big East tournament champions this year.

Following him is Kelvin Sampson of the Houston Cougars. He has transformed the team into a modern-day powerhouse. The Cougars could not go ahead of the sweet-16 of the NCAA tournaments this year. However, they did triumph in the American Athletic Conference regular season once again. The team will now move to the Big 12 from the 2023-24 season. Finally, the Purdue Boilermaker’s head coach Matt Painter has formed this team one step at a time. This year Purdue stood unranked in the Associated Press poll at the beginning of the season. And surprising everyone, they now rank No. 1 on that poll after winning the Big Ten regular-season and tournament titles.

Top 5 Coaches to Keep An Eye in NCAA Men’s Division

Every coach performs his duty to architect their teams into the best ones. But the next two coaches tremendously changed the pattern of their respective teams.

The list is led by the highest-paid coach currently–Bill Self–who was one of the semifinalists for the Naismith Awards. His team the Kansas Jayhawks won the Big-12 Conference regular season this year which is considered one of the toughest. They are also ranked in the top 10 for every poll by the AP.

Finally, at the top stands the Kansas State head coach– Jerome Tang. It is his first season with the team but his unparalleled leadership got him multiple awards for coaching this year. Further, while the team could not get its fifth final four this year, it made some comebacks like reaching the top 5 in the Associated Press poll.

Coaches are the players that can see the light at the end of the tunnel. They are not simply there to guide the players on a court, but to help them unlock their truest potential. While these coaches are the best of the best in the men’s NCAA, all the others also matter.
