Northwestern University finally unlocked the doors to its shiny new $875 million Ryan Field for a marquee Big Ten clash against Penn State. The school expected fans to gush over the most expensive stadium in college football history. Instead, the grand opening turned into a viral meme fest when visiting media members ran into embarrassing press box seating issues, prompting college football fans to ironically call on former NFL head coach Mike Tomlin for an architectural rescue mission.

How did a Super Bowl-winning coach end up in the middle of a college football press box debate? It all kicked off when sports journalist Joel Haas took to X to share a peek behind the scenes. What he showed was a press box crammed tightly into a narrow walkway, leaving reporters struggling to even get a clear view of the field.
“Half the press box is now standing to see the field. Others are sitting on stacks of cardboard boxes. Ugly scene here,” his X post stated.
Social media users quickly jumped on the post, pointing out the sheer absurdity of a brand-new $875 million venue leaving journalists hunting for makeshift seats. One user dryly noted that while the night lights looked great, the builders clearly missed out on basic utility. “Look like the did miss on a key feature. Other than that, it looked awesome at night,” a fan wrote.
Built as an intimate 35,000-seat stadium, the new Ryan Field is currently the smallest home ground in the Big Ten conference. While Northwestern intentionally cut capacity to bring fans closer to the action, the trade-off seems to have left media infrastructure on the back burner.
So how does an $875 million venue miss the mark on basic media seating? Big Ten conference guidelines require modern press boxes to provide clear sightlines and working desks for over a hundred media members. However, Northwestern’s design team built Ryan Field with a primary focus on fan proximity and high-paying luxury suites.
To fit 35,000 seats and a canopy system into a tight suburban footprint, the press area got squeezed into a narrow corridor behind tinted glass. By prioritizing premium fan experience, the university accidentally left visiting journalists sitting on literal stacks of cardboard.
One fan snarkily commented, “Prioritized fans and viewing public over ‘press’ attendees? Well done NU! This may truly be the perfect stadium.”
Amid the online roasting, fans began dropping Mike Tomlin’s name. “Embarrassing. Should’ve had Mike Tomlin design the stadium. IYKYK,” one fan wrote, triggering thousands of likes and agreeing comments. The joke took off instantly because sports fans were already obsessed with a wild piece of news Tomlin had dropped just days earlier regarding his personal hobbies.

This X user found hundreds agreeing with the light-hearted joke about Tomlin’s Minecraft architectural wonders. One replied with “Unreal comment,” while another said “underrated comment lol.”
It did not take long for fans to bridge the gap between a college stadium design flaw and an NFL legend. Rather than calling for stadium engineers or university administrators, the internet insisted that Tomlin should take over with a video game controller in hand.
Just recently, the 54-year-old revealed his years-long project. In a 20-minute YouTube video, Tomlin opened up about his love for skyscrapers and urban planning as a preface to the world he built on Minecraft over a decade.
What started as an observation of his children using the unlimited resources to build whatever they wanted in the video game became how the family spends time together. His project started as a small, lively neighborhood of high-rise buildings around a body of water. The internet fell in love with this side of the NFL coach and now jokes about how he could use that $800 million better. Or at least the stadium could’ve been beta-tested.
“This easily could have been tested in Minecraft beforehand,” one wrote. While explaining his project, Tomlin introduced his “boutique hotel,” the first building he ever built. He also shared how he was “lighting conscious” during the construction and chose a glass ceiling whenever necessary and appropriate. His endearing attention to detail won hearts, as one commented that Tomlin wouldn’t be so careless if he were in charge of the stadium.
“Mike Tomlin would never allow this,” the reply said. Because Tomlin’s virtual city has every detail to make the timing of this issue even funnier: his carefully planned buildings, aquarium, high-rise residences, green spaces and sports facilities are just too good to ignore. Plus, the press box is just one of the other issues.
The visiting locker room is not up to the standard either. Based on the photos shared online, fans questioned how a stadium this expensive could justify a visitor facility that looked comparatively basic. This stadium’s opening is a different ballgame. The school’s marching band did not perform its traditional pregame show at the inaugural game. Rather, it appeared at the Great Chicago Food Festival on the stadium grounds. This decision left fans and alumni confused.
The stadium’s design was mocked by the Colorado Buffaloes, who called Ryan Field a library during their losing visit. Northwestern silenced them with a 41-7 victory, but the remark does sting, especially when a football coach’s unwinding hobby is held in higher regard than your new home ground.
