The 2025 CFB season doesn’t officially begin until late August, but make no mistake—ESPN has already fired its first shot in the battle for broadcast dominance. With the network’s footprint sprawling across every major time slot, the opening week is shaping up to be less of a slow rollout and more of a blitz. And for college football fans? It’s Christmas morning in cleats. ESPN’s primetime programming, particularly on ABC, is set to deliver fireworks in the form of blue-blood clashes, including a tripleheader on Saturday, Aug. 30.
While whispers had been circulating online, multiple reports, including one from insider Brett McMurphy, confirmed the blockbuster plans: a Saturday tripleheader on August 30th that puts three heavyweight SEC vs. ACC showdowns on full display. The buzz started building when That SEC Football Podcast hosts Mike and Shane broke it all down: “Syracuse-Tennessee, that’s going to be the noon Eastern, 11:00 a.m. Central kickoff Week One. We got Alabama at Florida State, what a game that could be, Saturday August 30th, 3:30 Eastern on ABC. And then the big one, night game Week One, LSU at Clemson, 7:30 Eastern, 6:30 Central. All those—so this is a tripleheader on ABC that’s going to be fantastic.”
And fantastic might be underselling it. ABC has lined up its cards and gone all-in, sandwiching arguably two of the most anticipated non-conference games of the early season around a high-tempo appetizer in Tennessee-Syracuse. Alabama traveling to Tallahassee will pit Kalen DeBoer’s system against Mike Norvell’s high-wire offense in a matchup that smells like playoff implications. And the nightcap? LSU at Clemson, a Tigers vs. Tigers showdown that features two teams clawing to reestablish national dominance in the post-Burrow and post-Watson eras, respectively. You couldn’t write a better script for opening weekend.

It’s the SEC on full display, and ABC didn’t stop with Saturday. Sunday is set to bring its own spice, with South Carolina taking on Virginia Tech in Atlanta, a 3:00 p.m. ET kick on ESPN that could have sneaky conference-shifting implications. That game gives the SEC a fourth swing at the ACC in just two days, a scheduling quirk that feels less like a coincidence and more like strategic messaging. Just like last year’s Week 1, which delivered big for ESPN with USC’s dramatic win over LSU in the Sunday night window.
SEC/ACC opening weekend kickoff/broadcasts
Aug 30, Saturday
Syracuse-Tennessee (Atlanta), noon ET ABC
Alabama at Florida State, 3:30 pm ABC
LSU at Clemson, 7:30 pm ABCAug 31, Sunday
South Carolina-Virginia Tech (Atlanta), 3 pm ESPN— Brett McMurphy (@Brett_McMurphy) May 13, 2025
And when it comes to brand-building, ABC has struck gold. The network has locked in three distinct kickoff windows—noon, 3:30, and primetime—which keeps eyeballs glued from morning to night. It’s football theater at its finest. And each matchup brings a unique style contrast.
Tennessee’s up-tempo vertical assault under Josh Heupel will test a Syracuse team that’s trying to find stability post-Garrett Shrader. Alabama’s methodical, power-spread look under Kalen DeBoer goes toe-to-toe with Mike Norvell’s hybrid tempo system. And Brian Kelly’s LSU squad, which has evolved into a vertical passing threat, will be tested by a Clemson defense still rooted in Brent Venables’ fingerprints.
What’s your perspective on:
Is ESPN's SEC vs. ACC tripleheader the ultimate kickoff for college football fans this season?
Have an interesting take?
The stakes? Immense. Just like last season’s Week 1 of the 2024 season delivered big for ESPN networks, led by USC’s late win over LSU on Sunday night on ABC. That game drew 9.2 million viewers, marking ABC’s third-best Sunday CFB opener on record.

ACC and ABC on a generational run
College football fans, go ahead and cancel any Labor Day weekend plans that don’t involve a couch, snacks, and non-stop ACC action. ESPN and Disney dropped some heat on Tuesday, May 13, revealing the TV designations for seven of the biggest Atlantic Coast Conference matchups set for Week 1 of the 2025 season—and it’s shaping up to be an absolute banger of an opening week.
From Thursday, August 28, to Monday, September 1, fans are getting five straight days of ACC football, with marquee showdowns scattered across the extended holiday weekend. Seven ACC teams will be tested early with Power 4 non-conference games—including a splash of Notre Dame—while five more take on tough FBS competition between Weeks 0 and 1.
The biggest fireworks? Sunday, August 31, brings a double dose of drama as Miami and Virginia Tech face off against preseason top-25 teams. Then, save room for dessert—Labor Day night wraps the weekend with a bang as North Carolina hosts TCU in a nationally televised clash featuring Bill Belichick’s long-awaited college coaching debut.
