Rhett Lashlee’s SMU made history on Saturday. It’s their first home win against a ranked team in over 50 years. Fans wasted no time rushing the field, causing chaos. They broke one of the field goal posts as part of the tradition and went for a celebration march out of the stadium. Despite the high praise and celebration, the memorable pieces are now available for auction, allowing fans to cherish them for a lifetime.

SMU’s official fundraising organization, the Mustang Club, is officially auctioning the field goal posts of Ford Stadium as a memory of SMU’s 26-20 win over Miami. The goalpost is now available in two different sizes: 6 inches and 10 inches. Eight pieces of each size are out for auction and are inscribed with SMU’s head coach, Rhett Lashlee’s signature. The six-inch pieces start at $1,800, and the ten-inch pieces start at $4,000. They are available for bidding until November 12 on the LiveSource App.

Despite the historical win and memorable celebrations, the ACC fined SMU for not adhering to the conference’s rules and regulations. According to ACC’s event security policies, fans cannot storm onto the field before the visiting team and game officials leave the ground.

Since the policy is being breached, ACC announced on Sunday that SMU will be fined $ 50,000 as a penalty for not following the protocols, as a first-time violator. Although the fine appears hefty, it is just a fraction of what the SEC typically penalizes schools. According to reports, SEC teams face a $500,000 fine if fans storm the field before others have departed.

SMU’s president, Jay Hatzell, was well aware of the penalty and wasted no time, taking to social media that he would pay the school’s fine. Hartzell wrote on X, “I neither condone nor support it, for the record, but I’ll pay the fine…”

They were not the only ACC team fined on Saturday. Hours later, NC State defeated Georgia Tech by 48-36 at the Carter-Finley Stadium. Their fans did the same and ended up paying a $50,000 fine to the ACC’s Weaver-James-Corrigan-Swafford Postgraduate Scholarship, similar to the one awarded to the Mustangs.

SMU’s upset win against Miami has a serious impact on the ACC

The SMU’s win against Miami on Saturday marked their sixth win this season, keeping their hopes for the championship game alive with a 4-1 ACC record. The Mustangs now have to win the remaining three games to enter the ACC title contention. They will also retain their head coach, Rhett Lashlee, for the foreseeable future, as the win came hours after his contract extension. It keeps him out of the open Power 4 head coaching jobs in the country.

On the other hand, SMU’s win almost ended Miami’s playoff and ACC title contention hopes. Miami has now dropped to the 7th position in the ACC rankings and to the 18th position in the first CFP rankings released this week. This means Miami can’t afford to lose a game in the remaining schedule to secure a playoff spot.

This makes the ACC without an undefeated team. And the conference title contenders are likely to be either Georgia Tech, Duke, Louisville, Pittsburgh, or SMU, all of which have one conference loss. Likewise, Virginia remains the only undefeated team in the ACC, but it has also lost one game against NC State.
