At this point, it’s no newsflash that Ed Orgeron wants to come back as a head coach. It’s been 4 years since his last coaching job, and doesn’t want to wait around anymore. He’s already got the ball rolling, having thrown his hat into the ring at multiple open programs. One of them, however, might not be in the picture for the former coach.

Ed Orgeron is in talks with Arkansas to be Sam Pittman’s replacement, On3’s Pete Nakos reported. But radio personality Bobby Bones is not too keen on seeing him at Fayetteville. “Won’t be this coach,” he wrote on X, sharing Nakos’ post. After Orgeron’s hot-cand-cold tenure at LSU, not many are keen to see him back in the SEC. But it’s also not too far off of a landing spot for someone like Ed Orgeron.

Arkansas being an SEC program is a big reason why the former coach chose to go there. His name, and the tag of being an SEC seems like something that could go together, in theory. Ed Orgeron brought a lot of results to LSU, but the 2019 National Championship-winning troupe is something he’ll always get to have bragging rights over. Orgeron has competed in the top level, perhaps with stakes that are even than they are at LSU.
Another pro, of course, is him as a recruiter. Ed Orgeron had 5 top 10 classes in his time at LSU. He was a top recruiter in the Baton Rouge area, and had an eye for going after the best, 5 of the 2019 championship-winning class went to the draft and were picked in the first round itself. Arkansas could desperately use someone like him to turn things around.
Arkansas, meanwhile, are yet to see success in Bobby Petrino’s term as interim HC. He is a candidate Orgeron has to fight off to win the job, after all. Nakos also shared earlier that Arkansas is also looking at G5 coaches, including stars like Jon Sumrall and Alex Golesh. With just one stand-out tenure in his career, where will Ed Orgeron find a home?

Can Ed Orgeron shake things up for Arkansas?
Ed Orgeron going to Arkansas is a huge deal. Fans wanted the Razorbacks to pick someone who has a good track record, and could also come at an okay price. Jon Sumrall could have been one such candidate. But Orgeron being entertained by Arkansas means there definitely is a lot involved, in terms of money matters. It’s an uncharacteristic step for Arkansas, but it could prove to be beneficial.

Recruiting will definitely see a boost with Orgeron in the lead. He was a strong force in the south during his LSU days, and before that during his short Ole Miss career. That presence could seriously bolster up Arkansas among future recruits. Orgeron is also familiar with the importance of NIL’s influence, having seen those rules become more airtight in 2019. Arkansas’ NIL donors are also helping support the basketball program a lot. Football can also be considered by donors should Orgeron be picked.
“it may be a head coach job. It may be a defensive line job with someone that I believe can win a championship… I’m a championship coach and I’m gonna bring a winning program to their university,” Orgeron told On3 when not this many jobs had opened in the market. But now, as he’s put himself in the mix of jobs at Arkansas, LSU, Oregon State and more, it is evident how badly he wants to come back to the sport. And, there’s little confidence in his ability to win. Will Arkansas take a gamble with getting Ed Orgeron on board?
