After a week off following their statement win over Notre Dame in Week 3, Texas A&M HC Mike Elko is gearing up his squad for a high-voltage SEC opener against Auburn this Saturday. So far, the Aggies’ offense is humming, led by dynamic wideout duo Mario Craver and KC Concepcion. Craver torched Notre Dame with 7 catches for 207 yards, including an 86-yard TD, while Concepcion, QB Marcel Reed’s go-to target, has racked up 13 catches for 227 yards. So, both are ready to ignite the field in a showdown that promises fireworks.

But even with all that confidence, Elko grew noticeably uncomfortable when asked about Auburn’s receiving corps. Why? The Tigers’ wideouts have shown flashes of explosiveness despite a shaky O-Line that allowed a program-record 10 sacks against Oklahoma. So clearly, Elko knows this matchup won’t be a walk in the park.

On Monday, when asked about Auburn’s standout WRs Cam Coleman and Eric Singleton, Mike Elko didn’t hide his unease. “Oh God,” he admitted. “I think it’s been really good to see there.” But when it came to matchups, the Aggies’ coach was blunt. “You’ve heard my story on matchups. I would way rather be playing guys who weren’t big, athletic, fast, and 10.2 in the 100-meter. So this is a really, really talented wide receiver corner. We’ll see how we do on Saturday. But there are a lot of other teams I’d rather try to match up with on Saturday at wide receiver than this group.” So Elko’s respect and slight worry for Auburn’s speedsters was clear. And now, the stage is set for some payback.

Auburn’s 2024 four-overtime win over Texas A&M still stings for the Aggies. That thriller not only knocked A&M out of SEC title contention but also left a mark on the players. OL Ar’Maj Reed-Adams didn’t mince words at SEC Media Days. “Yeah, it’s definitely personal,” he said. “It’s coming. That’s all I gotta say.” So, revenge is on the horizon. Despite that, Auburn HC Hugh Freeze didn’t mince words on Tiger Talk, declaring Texas A&M “more complete” than Oklahoma. It’s a bold statement that could set the stage for some strategic gamesmanship from Mike Elko. But don’t sleep on Auburn’s WR unit.

Auburn’s wide receivers are showing serious firepower. Cam Coleman opened the 2025 season with a TD against South Alabama, while Eric Singleton Jr. led the team with six catches for 65 yards. With a 31-15 season-opening win, these Tigers are ready to make big plays and steal the spotlight in the upcoming showdown. And here’s the twist. Despite having defensive guru Mike Elko at the helm, Texas A&M’s defense has struggled out of the gate in 2025. The Aggies are surrendering 28.7 PPG, ranking dead last in the SEC. That’s a stark contrast to Oklahoma, whose defense sits second in the SEC in points allowed and first in yards allowed per game. So, Elko’s unit will need a major shake-up to stop Auburn’s high-powered offense. But is Elko’s squad fully healthy?

Mike Elko’s squad could get a big boost

Texas A&M’s O-line has been doing heavy lifting all season, even without one of its top players. They’ve kept QB Marcel Reed comfortable and opened lanes for the run game, shining against tough opponents like Notre Dame. Now, the Aggies could finally get a major boost as that missing piece inches closer to returning.

5th-year swing tackle Reuben Fatheree, out since fall camp with an injury, could return for Saturday’s clash with Auburn. Mike Elko dropped a hint during Monday’s press availability, stating, “He’s getting really close. He was able to go out there and practice today. Hopeful we’ll have him in some capacity on Saturday.” Honestly, Fatheree’s versatility could finally allow Texas A&M to run a complete offensive plan.

Although Fatheree’s career at Texas A&M has been a rollercoaster. He shone as a true freshman, even neutralizing Will Anderson in the 2021 win over Alabama. But regressed under Steve Addazio before bouncing back in 2024. Now, even a limited return this week would be a huge lift for the Aggies’ line.
