Well, talk about a more dynamic QB1 situation than Ole Miss after week 3. Coming fresh off winning against the Arkansas team 3-0 in the league, but what is the real issue? Austin Simmons’ health. His foot injury became a significant turning point in the game. Sure, he tried throwing for a 4-yard touchdown, but quickly returned to the sidelines and couldn’t return. That’s when Trinidad Chambliss came and impacted like a Netflix thriller ending. But now with Chambliss in the mix, Simmons’ position looks shaky.

There’s no doubt that Trinidad Chambliss stole the show in Ole Miss’s 41-35 win against Arkansas. This guy came in, ran for two touchdowns, and threw for one with a 4-yard pass to Harrison Wallace, giving Ole Miss a 38-28 lead in the third quarter. And the result? Explosive as he completed 21 of 29 passes for 353 yards, filling in for Austin Simmons.
And that’s what makes him a perfect QB1 option. Even ESPN’s Greg McElroy highlighted the same: “I mean, just a shootout, a heroic performance from Trinidad Chambliss. Counted for 400 plus, with several touchdowns in the game as well. Ole Miss may have found a new QB in beating Arkansas. This is a guy that is visiting with Lane Kiffin; man, he loves his backup. Now I don’t know if we’re at the point yet where we say “quarterback drama in Oxford, Mississippi.” That’s where the problem begins.

Austin Simmons is a gifted guy. Through his first two games, he completed 33 of 55 passes for 576 yards, three touchdowns, and four interceptions, numbers that drew everyone’s attention. But the issue? His decision-making accuracy, as those interceptions highlighted, tells a different story. Even McElroy is pointing out the same: “If we’re going based on performance up to this point of the season, Austin Simmons, tremendous player, tremendous talent, but decision making has plagued them a little in the first two games.”
Interceptions might be a problem for Austin Simmons, but his multiple scoring drives show he’s a QB1 material. But his injury might halt his run. “Now he’s banged up. Left leg is injured. Didn’t look comfortable even when he went in the game. Chambliss goes in there, provides the element of the run, doesn’t drop off much in the passing game. I wouldn’t be that surprised if Chambliss is the guy going forward,” Greg said. That’s possible if Simmons doesn’t look healthy heading into Week 4 against Tulane.

Lane Kiffin gives health update on Austin Simmons
Well, Austin Simmons’ health condition remains a hot topic after he reinjured his ankle while going up against Arkansas. But despite concerns, Lane Kiffin seems optimistic about his medical developments. “I didn’t see Austin today, but talking to the doctors today and looking at the X-rays, I think Austin is going to be fine,” Kiffin said. So, there’s a high chance this kid might return next week. He has this never-giving-up attitude, which he showed in the game, too.

His ankle was heavily taped as he played in the second quarter, and he even led a touchdown drive. And that’s not a small feat. However, Lane Kiffin also pointed out how the situation got out of hand during the second quarter. “I walked out of the locker room at halftime with him,” Kiffin said. “He just looked like he was really struggling. I don’t think I would have put him in.” This injury follows a previous foot issue Simmons suffered in the Kentucky game, which kept him in a walking boot in the lead-up to the Arkansas game.
Now, heading into Week 4, the Rebels are at home against Tulane, and everyone’s hoping for Austin Simmons’ healthy return. And to ensure that happens, the team will continue assessing him during practice before Saturday’s game. Let’s wait and see who finally takes up the reins against them next week.
