In a jam-packed press conference before the 2025 season started, Deion Sanders opened up on his battle with bladder cancer. After going through surgery in May, he was right back up and ready to coach despite the post-cancer complications. That same resiliency has still kept him put in Colorado, despite on-field woes. His daughter, Shelomi, too, reflects the same strength fighting a chronic disease since she was just 13 and is now breaking major myths around it.

Shelomi took to Instagram and posted a reel shattering taboos around type 1 and 2 diabetes. It was a simple yet fun video where she displayed common statements on her condition and signaled whether it was a ‘Myth’ or the ‘Truth’. “T1D and T2D are both metabolic disorders and are caused by lifestyle factors (diet, exercise, etc.),” appeared on the video. Before anyone could guess whether it was a myth or the truth, she quickly trotted towards the ‘Myth’ sign on the video. But that’s not where Shelomi stopped.
Another statement appeared where she wrote about type 1 diabetes being “an autoimmune disease.” Shelomi then mentioned the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes: “T2D is a metabolic disorder. While abnormal glucose levels can indicate diabetes, they alone do not distinguish between type 1 and type 2- that’s why T1D screening is so useful.” Then, she briefly let her followers guess whether it was a myth or the truth before moving towards the ‘Truth’ sign.

This was followed by her debunking a few more statements, and she later presented several other misconceptions around diabetes. It’s powerful to see Shelomi handling her diagnosis of type 1 diabetes in a fun way and breaking misconceptions around it. Even throughout her diagnosis, the 21-year-old has always kept a ripe smile on her face and inspired thousands to cope with their own chronic diseases.
At 13 years old, when teenagers are still trying to make sense of the world around them, Shelomi was presented with shocking news. It happened one odd day when her father, Deion Sanders, and her brothers were out of town, and she started throwing up continuously. Shelomi was then immediately rushed to the ER and was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. It explained why she always felt thirsty, and no matter how much she worked out, she was slimming down. The symptoms were always there, but now all of it lay bare in front of her.

“Being that young and getting diagnosed, it was pretty tough just because I didn’t expect to take on that much responsibility at a young age. I was just very insecure,” said Shelomi. She would hide her glucose monitor and devices from her peers and would go to the bathroom to take injections. It happened gradually, but Shelomi finally found inspiration to talk about her diagnosis openly. Something she is now doing avidly and regularly on social media. Not to mention, she is also a prolific guard for Alabama A&M’s basketball team. That surely comes with an inspiration from Coach Prime.

Shelomi spreads positivity, taking Coach Prime’s example
Deion Sanders, in his coaching and playing career, has had his fair share of health setbacks. Right from undergoing a surgery for his dislocated toe to getting it amputated due to a lack of blood circulation, his life hasn’t been particularly easy. Not to mention, the Buffs’ head coach had also undergone multiple surgeries for blood clots, as revealed in the ‘Coach Prime’ documentary. Even coping with his cancer diagnosis wasn’t easy, and we saw him being frail and weak, posting videos from his ranch in Texas.
Despite all of that, Coach Prime has climbed the coaching ladder steadily and is an inspiration for thousands, including his daughter, Shelomi.“I was really in denial and very insecure about it for so long. So one day, I just made a video explaining my devices and what I’ve been through, and I’ve gotten so much love since then. I kind of wish I had more of an open mind when I first got diagnosed,” said Shelomi.

Following her father’s example, Shelomi now openly talks about her diagnosis and spreads awareness about her condition whenever she gets a chance. She even shares images of herself flaunting her glucose monitor and insulin devices. Sanders’ journey is another example of the resilience that runs through the Sanders family. Coach Prime anchors Colorado in rough times while battling through his health challenges, and his daughter, Shelomi, tackles the shortcomings of her life, taking after her father.
