Bill Belichick has once again proven that he operates entirely on his own wavelength, even if it means accidentally slighting the sacred athletic history of the university paying his salary.

During a regular weekly press conference, the legendary NFL icon turned North Carolina Tar Heels football coach was asked a question about basketball. His answer has gone viral across the sports world.

Standing right in front of a giant media wall covered in Jordan Brand Jumpman logos, Belichick basically shrugged off the entire sport.

“I don’t know anything about basketball. Basketball is a pretty simple game. It’s putting a ball in a hoop,” Belichick said.

While the dry, straight-faced comment was classic Belichick, saying it at UNC made it a hilarious accident. For sports fans and historians, boiling an entire sport down to just “putting a ball in a hoop” feels like a public disrespect on this specific campus.

Chapel Hill isn’t just any regular college town. It is arguably the biggest capital of college basketball in the world.

The school’s basketball team has a mind-blowing 116-year legacy that goes all the way back to their very first season in 1910. By pretending the sport is just a super basic game, Belichick accidentally ignored over a century of pure dominance.

They are sitting on a mountain of trophies, including six NCAA National Championship titles (1957, 1982, 1993, 2005, 2009, and 2017) and a record-breaking 21 Final Four appearances. On top of that, they have taken home 18 ACC Tournament trophies and a staggering 33 ACC regular-season titles.

When Belichick blew off the sport, he essentially shrugged his shoulders at the exact program that created Michael Jordan, legendary coach Dean Smith, and dozens of NBA superstars.

Local reporter RoddBaxley shared the clip and said media didn’t even get a chance to ask Belichick about mid-range jump shots, but teased that they might try again next week.

While the basketball team was busy ruling the sports world and collecting shiny gold trophies like it was nothing, the UNC football team was mostly just hanging out in the background. They have put together a solid history over the last century, but it definitely hasn’t been half as good as anywhere near the basketball.

Tar Heel football has had some great moments. They won a few conference titles back in the day and have sent an absolute ton of elite talent to the NFL, including legendary Hall of Famers like Lawrence Taylor and Julius Peppers. They’ve played in plenty of big-time bowl games over the decades, but they have never managed to win a national championship as the hoops team does for fun.

For the last hundred-plus years, UNC football has basically been stuck in a loop of being a totally decent program that lives in the giant shadow of a massive basketball empire. That is exactly why the school spent the big bucks to bring in Belichick to finally change things up.

This exact style of not caring about anything else is what North Carolina signed up for when they made the move to hire the 72-year-old coach, who has won six Super Bowls. Belichick has spent his entire life looking at the world through a hyper-focused football lens. To him, if a sport doesn’t involve a 100-yard field, a 53-man roster, or hours of studying game film on defensive coverages, it is just simple by comparison.

Not to mention, UNC is in the middle of a cultural shift, apparently. For decades, UNC has been fiercely proud of being a “basketball school” first, second, and third, while the football team usually played second fiddle to the winter action inside the Dean Smith Center. Bill’s $50 million for 5 years hire proves they are going to make football as good as the basketball or better, perhaps.

So far, that change has been super bumpy and has turned into a bit of a media circus. Belichick’s squad went through a painful 4–8 train wreck of a season last year, full of bad looks, locker room issues, and a lot of mad fans.

However, they have played some pretty good football this season. At 3-2, the Tar Heels picked up their first ranked win of the season against No. 25 Pittsburgh, which actually caused Belichick to crack a rare smile.

Even in their losses to Clemson (28-20) and Notre Dame (37-26), Belichick’s squad kept the game close, something that you did not see in last year’s Tar Heels football.

When asked about the big win, he gave a classic, blunt answer: “Yeah, we’ll just get ready for Duke.”

End of the day, Tar Heels fans are perfectly fine with him knowing nothing about basketball, as long as his simple view of sports helps them win football games in the ACC.

But until the football team starts winning real championships to match the campus standard, Belichick might want to show a little more respect to the sport that put the university on the map over the last 116 years.
