The revolving door of college football recruiting just spun the wrong way for Bill Belichick and North Carolina. What looked like a promising week after the Tar Heels secured key commitments for their class of 2027 has been soured by the sudden decommitment of a key defensive prospect

As per Rivals’ Hayes Fawcett, four-star safety Marquis Bryant has decommitted from Bill Belichick’s program. The 6-foot, 190-lb player had been committed to the program since December. Back then, committing to UNC made so much sense for Bryant, a defensive back from Rolesville, North Carolina, because his proximity to the program was a clear advantage that would benefit both parties.
Before committing to UNC in December, Bryant was heavily pursued by national powers like Clemson, Georgia, and Ohio State, holding offers from a long list of top programs. In total, he currently holds 38 offers. Now that his recruitment is open, there is no clear favorite yet.
“I’ve thought about official visits, but I don’t have any scheduled right now. My recruitment is 100% open,” he told Rivals. “The goal is to open everything back up. I want to find the best fit for me, both as a player and academically. I will search for that while continuing to work on my craft.”
Bryant is ranked No. 188 nationally, the No. 19 safety, and the No. 9 in the state of North Carolina, per the 247Sports recruiting ranking. Over three seasons in High School, he recorded 139 tackles, 23 pass deflections, 8 interceptions, 4 forced fumbles, and 1 sack.
Earlier this week, he visited Josh Heupel’s Volunteers at Knoxville, where he sounded enthusiastic about the program and the coaches.
“The staff showed me around and where I would fit into the new defense,” Bryant said. “The coaches talked to me a lot and really expressed that they like my football IQ. They told me to come in and compete. Seeing the new defensive coaches work and coach their guys stood out,” Bryant said. “They were coaching them up, helping them learn the defense and working hard to help the players grow.”
The fact that Bryant’s decommitment came immediately after his visit to Tennessee may suggest a degree of momentum towards the Vols. However, he is scheduled to take more spring visits, with a trip to Kentucky coming on April 17. The decision to decommit is driven by going into those visits with a clear head rather than having the ‘committed’ tag hanging over his head.
The decommitment also doesn’t mean that Belichick is fully out. The UNC staff will likely push for a ‘re-commitment’ once his spring tour ends and he returns home to North Carolina.
Recent updates on UNC’s 2027 recruiting class
The news of Bryant’s decommitment came a few days after UNC added two three-star commitments to the 2027 recruitment class. Isaiah Stephens of Sheridan, Arkansas, and Tahseem Butler of Glassboro, New Jersey, are UNC’s latest commitments.
The 5-foot-7, 170-pound Stephens brings game-breaking potential, evidenced by his more than 2,000 scrimmage yards and 25 touchdowns in 2025. His explosiveness is also apparent on the track, where he has clocked a 10.83-second 100-meter dash, making him a versatile threat out of the backfield
At 6-foot, 230 pounds, Butler was a disruptive force last fall, racking up 138 tackles and 34 tackles for loss. That production earned him offers from programs like Pitt and Syracuse before he ultimately committed to the Tar Heels.
While the additions of Stephens and Butler soften the blow, losing an in-state, four-star talent like Bryant underscores the challenge UNC faces in keeping top prospects home.
