Who would have thought BYU’s three-game winning streak since 1992 would turn out to be this exciting? After a 24-21 win against Utah, BYU’s Bear Bachmeier did the famous kneel-down gesture to end the game, but fans were planning something else as they ran on the field at Utah’s LaVell Edwards Stadium to celebrate their team’s victory. Now everyone knows how storming fields turns out in college football. The Big 12 hit BYU with a hefty five-figure fine, but this story took a sweet twist.

Crumbl Cookies CEO Jason McGowan stepped in to cover the $50,000 penalty and then some. McGowan even shared a video on X of head coach Kalani Sitake telling the team who paid the fine, turning a costly consequence into a feel-good moment for Cougar Nation. “The moment in the BYU locker room the players found out I personally paid the fine to let the fans storm the field. Us, donors and fans, have our players’ backs, period. @BYUCougars,” McGowan said. But there’s more to the story.

Storming fields is part of the tradition of celebrating a team’s dominance, and McGowan understands it pretty well. As Crumbl highlighted the real reason behind their CEO’s move, stating, “During the BYU game, our CEO, Jason McGowan, was on the field watching the game and saw how excited the fans were. When he learned that no one would be allowed to go onto the field, he offered to personally pay the fine so everyone could celebrate together,” Crumbl said. “Jason has built his career around creating meaningful moments, and he didn’t want to miss the chance to help his fellow Cougar fans enjoy one.”

Just so you know, it wasn’t just fans who ended up storming the field; even players joined in, like running back LJ Martin. This isn’t the first time any team has been fined for field storming. Last year, Arizona State fans stormed the field after their win against BYU, and they were fined $25k. Even Colorado was supposed to get fined $50k when fans stormed the field after winning over Iowa State, but their safety rules saved them from it.

Now, what else can you expect from a team that entered as a 3.5-point underdog into the game and ended up winning it? Let’s dig deeper into it.

BYU’s remarkable rivalry win against Utah

After winning against Utah, BYU continues their undefeated status in the league with a 7-0 record. But this time it wasn’t just BYU’s excellence but also Utah’s mistakes that landed them victory. Despite finishing off with more passing and rushing yards, Utah came up short because of 12 penalties and two turnovers. Now, with that, BYU’s offense made it really easy for them to win against Utah, as their running back, LJ Martin, dominated the ground game with 26 carries for 122 yards with a TD. Even Bear Bechmeier threw for 229 yards with a touchdown.

All this made Kalani Sitake more confident in his team. After the game, he said, “It was a great game, and I’m just glad that we were able to get that victory, but you know, we’ve got to figure some things out for next week, because last year we won this game, and we didn’t win the next one [against Kansas],” Sitake said. “So as emotional and as excited as we are to win this game, I have 9:00 a.m. church tomorrow.”
