Texas A&M is looking dangerous. This was evident after winning against the favored Notre Dame. The Aggies have won against everyone in front of their path and are undefeated. Through it all their defense shined bright. But let’s not forget that Ohio State still has the no. 1-ranked defense in the nation after giving just 25 points in the entire season till now. Yet it looks like Kirk Herbstreit’s son is not convinced, as he thinks the Aggies’ defense is better than the Buckeyes’ despite Kirk’s ties with them.

Week 7 is bringing new surprises, but not the good ones for Ohio State, as On3’s Zak Herbstreit just dropped a banger on X, releasing his Week 6 College Football Superlatives. He pointed out what worked best for all the teams that won and what didn’t work for those that lost. And he chose Texas A&M for best defense in college football after they won against Mississippi State. But buckeye fans were confused as they saw OSU to clearly have an edge over the Aggies when it came to defensive production. Furthermore, knowing his father played for the Bucks as well, this almost felt like betrayal.

To be fair, there’s no doubt that Texas A&M is coming strong this season, going 5-0 and 2-0 for the first time since 2016. They were dominating on defense against MS State. In the first quarter they stopped the Bulldogs at the 6-yard line and forced a field goal. On top of that, two of their players were destructive forces. Linebacker Daymion Sanford and DE Cashius Howell. Sanford finished his game with nine tackles and two tackles for loss with one sack. Howell took over and got 3 sacks, making his total for the season to be 7 sacks.
But all of this production cannot compare to the Bucks defense. Despite a turnover in coaching staff and the departure of numerous key players, Ohio State’s defense in the 2025 season is widely seen as superior to their national championship-winning team from the previous year. Under new defensive coordinator Matt Patricia, the defense leads the nation by only allowing 5.0 points per game and has permitted just two total touchdowns through the first six weeks of the season.

The Buckeyes are ranked 8th in the nation in total yards (229.3 yards per game) and passing yards allowed (132 yards per game). They are ranked 4th in the nation when it comes to best third down-defense in the country. They are especially tough inside their own end zone and have not allowed a single touchdown in the red zone all season. The internet had a field day criticizing Zak’s take.
The Buckeye nation cooks Zak Herbstreit for his anti-Ohio State take
When Zak Herbstreit dropped his take, you bet Buckeyes fans came with pitchforks. First came his co-worker and national analyst, Ari Wasserman, who came up with a receipt backing the Buckeyes: “I’d go Ohio State’s defense. They have allowed 25 points … all season.” The Aggies defense are averaging 21.0 points per game this season. If we go band for band, they allowed 21 points per game. Ari gets the point here.
Another fan said, ” Texas A&M’s defense being the best is insane. Ohio State has given up 25 points total. Utah State scored 22 in a game not too long ago.” The Aggies allowed 22 points and 250 yards in Week 2. However, that was a notable bounce-back performance after allowing 373 yards in the season opener against UTEP.

The Buckeyes fan page, known as The Buckeye Nut, shared a clutch stat. “Texas A&M’s defense has given up 105 points this season. Ohio State has given up just 25.” What makes this even more impressive is that Ohio State held the Washington Huskies’ offense, which was averaging 536 total yards and 55.8 points per game, to just 6 points in Week 5.
One fan called Zak Herbstreit a ‘doofus’ for putting Texas A&M’s defense above Ohio State. “The lengths these doofuses will go to avoid saying how OSU’s clearly been the best team this year is embarrassing.” The Buckeyes are at the top of the food chain in the AP Poll. Even Buckeyes’ offense (37.4 ppg) is averaging more than the Texas A&M Aggies (34.8 ppg).
One more fan commented. “texas a&m defense givin up 21 ppg but yea sure before miss st. they was givin up 24 ppg.” Fair enough. The Aggies defense is pretty solid. Through five games, they are allowing an average of 180.4 passing yards and 109.2 rushing yards per game. They ranked 17th nationally in average yards allowed at just 4.4 per play. Despite this, calling Texas A&M defense better than Ohio State’s is still an extremely hot take that cannot really be defended.
