Shane Beamer and South Carolina football suffered their fourth loss of the season against Brent Venables’ Oklahoma Sooners, falling 26-7. It was also their lowest offensive performance of the year, managing just over 200 total yards and a single touchdown. The Gamecock Nation has had enough and is already putting Shane Beamer on the spot for his $1.1 million play-caller.

South Carolina entered the 2025 season with higher expectations than Alabama after finishing 9-4 in 2024. They were ranked No. 11 in the preseason AP Poll, and many believed LaNorris Sellers would have a Heisman-caliber season. Fast-forward to Week 8 — the Gamecocks are 3-4 overall (1-4 in the SEC), and their offense ranks near the bottom of the conference. After today’s loss to the Sooners, fans are openly questioning the existence of offensive coordinator Mike Shula.
LaNorris Sellers is a completely different player in 2025.
Mike Shula is the new South Carolina OC/play caller.

The biggest issue seems to be the offense, led by Shula. The Gamecocks have struggled to put points on the board, ranking 15th in scoring offense (22.3 PPG) and 16th in total offense (310.0 YPG). According to The State, they were even booed during their last home game, with fans chanting “Fire Shula” after another lackluster showing — just 225 total yards and 7 points against the Sooners. Turnovers and penalties have only made matters worse.
Quarterback LaNorris Sellers was sacked six times and had a tough time getting the ball downfield, finishing with just 124 yards and one touchdown. The junior QB, who entered the season with Heisman hype, has struggled to find consistency. Through five games, he’s thrown for 886 yards and four touchdowns with one interception.

Coach Beamer continues to back Shula, insisting the offense is improving, but the scoreboard and stat sheets tell a different story. Shula has pointed to turnovers, penalties, poor execution, and questionable play-calling as reasons for their struggles.
Gamecock Nation Turns on Shane Beamer and Mike Shula
When college football insider Matt Hayes took to X to question the credibility of Sellers and Shula, fans wasted no time joining in. One fan called out Beamer directly for hiring Shula, writing: “Blame Beamer, he was right there with Shula. He sees the game plan every week. Beamer wants Sellers to be a pro-style pocket QB. He was happy Loggains left because Loggains was trying to call plays to help Sellers succeed, not force him into a pure pro-style offense. We’re averaging 300 yards a game and 14 offensive points a game, meanwhile App State averages 420 and 28 points a game. Maybe Beamer is the issue, not the OCs.” For someone making $1.1 million as a base salary, this is absolutely horrendous.
Another fan went off on the offensive line and Beamer: “MF ruined everything and you got people in this fanbase who blame Sellers for everything. OL is DOG SH-T. This fanbase deserves the embarrassment it gets every year because 50% are morons and the other 50% are too loyal.” The Gamecocks have allowed nearly 20 sacks this season — second-most in the SEC — and their run-blocking has been abysmal, going just 1-for-8 on third downs against the Sooners.

Another fan compared Shula to former OC Dowell Loggains, saying: “Shula is the hire that’s going to cost Shane Beamer the most. I know SC fans weren’t big on Dowell Loggains, but he was five times better than Shula.” Since Shula’s promotion to OC from senior offensive assistant in December, South Carolina’s offensive production has dipped madly—from 407.8 yards per game in 2024 to barely 310.4 this year.
One more fan summed it up perfectly: “We’ve lived through a lot of bad OCs. We know what a bad offense looks like. What Shula has done with this level of talent is truly remarkable.” The offense’s talent on paper was loaded, but Shula’s poor play-calling and game strategy have derailed their preseason playoff hopes.
Finally, one fan proposed a coaching carousel shake-up: “Shula should probably be fired immediately, and if I were Beamer, I’d consider jumping to VT. South Carolina’s schedule doesn’t get easier next year, and another four-win season will ruin his chances. James Franklin to SC.” And honestly, it makes sense. The Gamecocks went 0-for-6 on third downs and totaled just 109 yards in the first half against Oklahoma. With playoff hopes now officially dead, this might be the right time for Beamer to move some pieces around and start preparing for next season.
