Travis Hunter’s dream of playing both ways in the NFL has hit a bit of a snag lately. Everyone’s been asking: will he be a wide receiver or a cornerback? Well, it’s now a million-dollar question and a tough choice for sure!

Most NFL experts, except his Buffaloes head coach, are doubtful about Hunter playing both offense and defense at the pro level. While it’s technically challenging, it isn’t impossible. And that’s what a former NFL quarterback believes too. He offers a bit of hope for Hunter but also hands a reality check about what’s truly possible in the NFL.

On his September 6th show, Cam Newton provided a real-world example instead of just dismissing Hunter’s ambitions. “Yes, I do think he can play both,” Newton said, giving Hunter’s fans some good news. But there’s a catch. “Do I think he can play 72 plays on defense and another 57 on offense in the NFL? No,” he added.

Deion Sanders stands by Travis Hunter

The Colorado Buffaloes are grabbing eyeballs with their much-improved play this season, and so is their star, Travis Hunter. Lately, Hunter has been a hot topic among NFL experts. Just last week, Champ Bailey had his thoughts for Hunter, saying, “A player can’t be elite in the NFL on both sides” of the field   Deion Sanders isn’t having it though. Speaking to BuffsTV on Thursday, he expressed frustration with former NFL stars who criticize Hunter’s two-way potential on their podcasts. While Sanders didn’t name anyone specifically, he made his feelings clear, asking, “How stupid is that?” and adding, “How can you say what a person can’t do just because you can’t fathom it?”

Sanders shared that NFL scouts also often ask him what position Hunter plays, expecting a straightforward answer like “wide receiver” or “defensive back.” Instead, Sanders responds, “He’s a football player.” Deion explained, “If you put him on offense in the NFL and leave him off defense, you’re going to look like a fool. He’s going to be your best defensive player not playing, and the same goes the other way around.” While that sounds bold and promising, the reality speaks otherwise. As Cam Newton points out, playing both sides is possible, but excelling in both is still a question mark.
