If there’s one thing Coral Gables can’t get enough of, it’s Carson Beck’s ability to remain calm and collected during the games. Beck’s former head coach, Kirby Smart, would call the quarterback, ‘Mr. Mellow for his cool demeanour. However, there are times on the field when costly mistakes on the turf get him ‘fiery’. His passion for the game distinctly peaking through. And that’s when the difference between offensive coordinators Shannon Dawson and Mike Bobo’s presence affected his output. And the QB is venting out his frustration in a recent conversation.

Carson Beck drew his redemption arc at Coral Gables. After an elbow injury put an end to his career at Georgia, he had decided to declare for the NFL draft, but Mario Cristobal roped him right back in. Naturally, the Dawgs were upset, but it has been a fruitful decision for Beck, who has entered the Heisman list, with +1100, as the latest Caesars Odds. Presently, his Miami stint is reaping fruit. And offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson is one of the reasons.

“I have a great love for the game, and it kind of just comes out of me at times, but you look over on the sideline, and he’s (Shannon Dawson) like this, like 24/7,” he said in a conversation with Gramlich & Mac Lain on Tuesday. He continues. “And I’ll walk over there after maybe a bad drive or a three-and-out, and we just have a conversation. It’s the first time ever that the offensive coordinator has been on the sideline with me, which has been very different.” At Athens, offensive coordinator Mike Bobo remained at the box, chipping in inputs via the phone, which was a slight frustration for Beck. But Dawson’s presence on the sidelines has helped Beck create a rapport with him that he couldn’t cultivate with Bobo.

Beck further says, “So, being able to actually communicate and converse with him eye to eye on the field comparative to being on like a phone talking to your offensive coordinator up in the box, it’s very different. And you feel like you can really connect and actually have communication.” In the 2025 season, Beck has tallied 972 yards, seven touchdowns, with a QB rating of 81.9, along with three interceptions. Certainly, his ‘interception game’ has drastically improved since last year. The 2024 campaign saw interceptions follow Beck like shadows. 12 to be exact, and Dawgs weren’t a merry bunch exactly.

“It’s not just like you’re listening to a phone and they’re telling you what to do on the field, right?” Carson Beck continues. “Or maybe a mistake you made or something you should have done. Like we can sit there and actually talk out things.” Beck is cashing in the opportunities present before him. The ones he could not leverage at Georgia. We are talking about his WR unit. Back in Georgia, the Bulldogs were topping the charts in dropped passes. Last season, he dropped 9.4% of his passes, recording 665 drop yards. To simplify it further, he could have chipped in an additional 665 yards, had the wide receivers not dropped the ball, as football analyst Clark Brooks put it.

But Miami’s WR room is as explosive as Beck’s arm strength. CJ Daniel’s incredible one-handed touchdown is all too fresh in our minds. His reaction? “There is no way he just caught that,” said a shocked Beck. “That was a luxury he didn’t enjoy last year at Georgia, where the Bulldogs were among the nation’s leaders in dropped passes,” writes On3’s Thomas Goldkamp.

However, aside from the sport itself, Carson Beck admires the OC. “But beyond that, just him as a person and him as a human being. I mean, I appreciate the way that he carries himself. I appreciate the way that he coaches me and carries himself for me.” However, Mike Bobo and Carson Beck share a wholesome bond.

When Mike Bobo challenged Carson Beck

The season opener was a blast. Miami was reigning high, as they beat Notre Dame, and Beck was back in national conversations. Next, they crushed the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats, 45-3, and Carson registered his name in Miami’s record book, breaking the record of QB Vinny Testaverde’s record 14 completions against the Oklahoma Sooners in 1986.

Beck completed 15 passes against the Wildcats. “It’s super cool to perform at a high level and do things like that,” he said post-game. But he wasn’t satisfied as he was aiming for 19 passes. The reason? Mike Bobo had challenged him, post week 1 matchup against the Irish, where he scored 12 passes, that he can’t break the 19-point record. That particular record was made by Bobo himself during his tenure as quarterback, playing at Georgia.

“I wouldn’t be the person or player I am today without Georgia, and I’ll always be a Bulldog. I am very appreciative of my time there,” Beck has said per UGA Wire. The memories of the eight-overtime thriller against Georgia Tech are still fresh in his mind. “He (Bobo) walked out of the locker room, and I was walking in, and I fell into his arms, and I said, ‘I don’t know what just happened, the emotions were insane.” Although his time at Georgia ended with an injury, he still reminisces about Athens.
