We’re already nearly a third of the way through the 2026 college football regular season. We waited months and months for football to finally start again, just for it to be going by in the blink of an eye.

With conference play ramping up this week, there’s been a lot of news in the college football world, especially on this Wednesday morning. From Deion Sanders making a quarterback change to a few teams making some roster changes, here’s a roundup of all the latest CFB news.

Deion Sanders benches starting QB for Colorado’s backup

The biggest news of the day comes from Boulder, Colorado, where Deion Sanders is benching former five-star quarterback Julian Lewis in favor of Isaac Wilson. Lewis, who has been CU’s starter all season long, has completed 64 percent of his throws for 733 yards, six touchdowns, and two interceptions, but most of those stats came against Weber State. In three games against power conference opponents, Lewis hasn’t topped 170 yards and has two touchdowns to two interceptions, and is 1-2 in those games.

After Lewis was benched last week, Isaac Wilson – the younger brother of former BYU QB Zach Wilson – took over and threw for 156 yards and a touchdown. He wasn’t flawless, but he looked better than Lewis has all year, so Sanders decided it was time to make the change before a brutal stretch against No. 12 Texas Tech, No. 13 Utah, and No. 19 Oklahoma State.

Rich Rodriguez’s WVU makes sudden roster addition

Rich Rodriguez is in his second year as the head coach of West Virginia (at least in this stint), and after a 4-8 season in 2025, he has the Mountaineers sitting at 3-1 with a win over then-ranked UVA. A big part of their success has been their offense, which is averaging well over 30 points per game, and they have been great on the ground, totaling 1,179 rushing yards and 13 rushing touchdowns through four weeks. They currently lead the nation in rushing yards per game, but they still felt the need to get deeper at running back.

On Tuesday, WVU dipped into the transfer portal and grabbed former Utah RB NaQuari Rogers, who was granted an injunction for a 5th year of eligibility earlier this week. Rogers, who has 1,598 rushing yards and 26 rushing touchdowns in his career, will add to what is already one of the best backfields in the country. WVU’s schedule isn’t too tough until the final four weeks, when they’ll go to Texas Tech and Utah and host Kansas and Houston. They’ll need all the help they can get during that stretch.

Southern deals with power outages during homecoming week

Southern University, the largest HBCU in Louisiana, is experiencing sporadic power outages across its campus in the lead-up to its Homecoming football game this Saturday.

“We recognize the inconvenience and disruption this outage has caused, particularly as we begin a highly anticipated Homecoming week,” officials stated. “Please be assured that our teams are working diligently to make the repairs and return the campus to normal operations as soon as possible.”

Louisville QB situation takes concerning turn

Louisville entered the season with high hopes. They were ranked in the preseason poll and almost knocked off a top-10 Ole Miss team in Week 1, but after a disappointing loss to Wake Forest last week, they’ll have to be flawless if they want a chance to win the ACC and make the College Football Playoff. And with a game against a pesky N.C. State team on the horizon, things just got a whole lot trickier.

Lincoln Kienholz, Louisville’s star quarterback, suffered an injury on the last play of the game against Wake Forest, and the school announced that he will be a game-time decision on Saturday. Jeff Brohm confirmed Kienholz is “dealing with something” but didn’t want to elaborate on the injury. Now, it may keep him out of one of the most important games of the season.

Kienholz has been fantastic, throwing for 1,140 yards and seven touchdowns while adding six more on the ground this season. Losing him would be a massive blow for Louisville as they try to keep their season alive.

Michigan State and Florida State injury update

The Michigan State Spartans already have a rough start to the season, and things just got even worse. After back-to-back losses to Notre Dame and Nebraska, Michigan State announced that star running back Cam Edwards will miss the remainder of the season with a lower-body injury, which caused him to be carted off the field last week. Edwards transferred from UConn, where he rushed for 1,200 yards and 15 touchdowns, and was off a to a good start, totaling 304 yards and three touchdowns before his premature exit on Saturday. MSU fans already didn’t have a lot to cheer for offensively, and now that he’s gone, it’s only going to get tougher.

While MSU is hurting from the loss of Edwards, Florida State is set to get a big member of their team back in freshman defensive back Jordan Crutchfield. The true freshman is expected to join the defensive back rotation this week. He’s been dealing with some nagging injuries all year, but he’s fully healthy now, and Mike Norvell is excited to see the freshman go to work in FSU’s defensive backfield. Florida State has allowed 340 passing yards per game thus far, so his return will be welcome.

Tulsa faces QB uncertainty

Tulsa finds itself sitting at 3-1 with their only loss of the season coming against Arkansas this past week, and with conference play kicking off this week against North Texas, they’re hoping to get their starting quarterback, Baylor Hayes, who helped them beat No. 19 Oklahoma State in Week 1, back.

Hayes suffered a knee injury in Week 2 and has missed the last two games, including their loss to Arkansas. He was relieved by Dexter Williams II, who has thrown for 340 yards and three touchdowns in his absence, but with everything still to play for, they want Hayes back as soon as possible. He’s currently listed as questionable for Saturday’s game against UNT, so we’ll have to wait and see if he’s ready to go.

Two Houston players remain ineligible after recent ruling

After the NCAA announced its new five-year eligibility rule earlier this year, a ton of players who graduated in 2025 have been trying to work their way back to college for another year of eligibility. In some cases, it has worked out. In others, it hasn’t.

For Houston wide receiver Stephon Johnson and defensive back Myles Rowser, it has not worked out. They both received a temporary restraining order against the NCAA in August and have been practicing with the team since, even traveling with them last Saturday, but on Monday, a court ruled them ineligible for the 2026 season.

“I see a lot of schools that have been successful in this,” Head Coach Willie Fritz said. “I’d like to see Houston be successful in it too. There are other people in the same exact situation and scenario that Stephon and Myles are in, and they’ve been OK’d. They’re playing. I would like that to happen with our guys.”

Kansas makes a double transfer portal move

West Virginia isn’t the only team making portal additions this late in the season. Kansas, which is 1-2 with losses to No. 25 Missouri and Arizona State through the first four weeks of the season, has gone out and added DT Clifton Thompson from Central Connecticut and RB Chase Belcher from Kennesaw State.

Thompson was an All-Conference DT for Central Connecticut in 2025, logging 27 tackles, seven tackles for loss, and two sacks. He’s massive, standing at 6-foot-1, 355 pounds, so he can plug holes on the interior of the defensive line.

Chase Belcher has been a very productive running back over the course of his career, totaling 1,299 rushing yards and eight touchdowns behind a 5.4 average, but that’s not all. He’s also an excellent receiver, catching 49 passes for 530 yards and four scores in his career.

Kansas needs help on both sides of the ball, and they got it in the portal this week.

D-III Football Program fires coach

We may only be four weeks into the CFB season, but that doesn’t mean it’s too early for coaches to be fired. Earlier this week, Albion, a D-III school, announced that they have fired Head Coach Travis Rundle just a month into the new season.

Rundle, a former Albion player, was in his fourth season with the team. In his first two years, Rundle helped Albion go a combined 14-6 in the regular season, but after a disastrous 2025 season where they won just three games and an 0-4 start in 2026, it was time for the two sides to part ways. Offensive Coordinator Stephen Wasil will take over as interim head coach.
