Purdue football was looking to bring in more offensive talent, and one of its early finds this year was Charles Ross. He came in through the transfer portal after having spent one year at USC. After transferring to Purdue, the wide receiver went through spring camp with the Boilermakers, and just when everything seemed fine, the player shared an unsettling piece of news… He decided to retire because of medical reasons.

He took to social media and announced: “To the fans, Honestly, I’m grateful for everything. God doesn’t make mistakes. This wasn’t my outcome for football. Dreams. Aspirations. Lovers. Fans. Doubters. This is something I cannot control. All the relationships I built from this game, I’m forever grateful. My HEALTH forever comes first. I will be medically retiring from football. Love, C4.”
His statement comes after Head Coach Barry Odom revealed on Thursday that Ross was no longer with the team. “Right now, he’s not on the team active… That would be where we’re at with him right now.” The coach had described it as a “health issue” and revealed that he did not expect the player to return. That stung! Ross was expected to contribute offensively when he transferred to Purdue.

Charles Ross was also not a part of Purdue’s first six camp practices. As of now, there isn’t much information available about whether his retirement stems from an injury or other health concerns. And so, the football program’s top wideouts currently are: Michael Jackson III, Chauncey Magwood, De’Nylon Morrissette, Nitro Tuggle, Arhmad Branch, E.J. Horton, and Corey Smith.

For a guy gearing up for his sixth college season (first five with Nevada, San Jose State, and USC), this must hurt. His college career witnessed him play a total of 38 games, 70 receptions, 904 receiving yards, and four receiving touchdowns. But before the transfers and before the medical file grew thick, Charles Ross was a California high school phenom at Culver City High: 83 receptions, 1,554 yards, and 25 touchdowns and a school record for scores in a season (12).
Rated as a 3-star high school player by On3, he had every reason to believe Saturdays would be his stage. And for a while, they were… Charles Ross shone brightest at San Jose State in 2023:
- Athlon Sports All-Mountain West Fourth Team.
- Ross appeared in 12 games at wide receiver.
- He hauled in 26 receptions for 347 yards and a touchdown.
- He also had a season-high five catches for 62 yards at USC.
While his personal chapter closes, his now-former team’s story is just getting started. Purdue is over a week into its fall camp, and Barry Odom is all about progress. After several practices, including the first in full pads on Thursday, the Boilermakers are trending upward. “Looking top to bottom, in all three phases, we got better today,” said Odom on Thursday. “Through six days, we’ve gotten better every day. Today was by far our best day.”
