Two Philly superstars, once side by side in midnight green, are now walking opposing sidelines under the same lights that made them “elite” legends. Michael Vick and DeSean Jackson are set for a face-off as head coaches at Lincoln Financial Field. But this isn’t your typical HBCU matchup. DeSean, the fiery first-year underdog, is reviving Delaware State, and Vick, the polished veteran, is attempting to stabilize Norfolk State following their rough start.

In a recent X post, Jackson says, “It’s war time.” That’s exactly how he expressed his feelings before his first head coaching matchup with Michael Vick, his lifelong brother and former quarterback. Jackson sees this as “a blessing,” as he put it, “This game right here was orchestrated by myself. This was our home game… shoutout Jeffrey Lurie, shoutout Tony Allen and everybody that made this happen.” He sees it as a full circle moment at the same field where they once played together for scores and now face off as head coaches.

Jackson declared with pride, “It’s the first time in NFL history two teammates, two elite teammates to play together, elite, legendary, and now coach against each other as head coaches at their home field.” During their time together, from 2010-2013, the QB-WR pair became one of the NFL’s most thrilling duos, achieving many feats together. Both got selected to Pro Bowls and won two NFC East titles.
But what happens now to that friendship before this face-off? “I love my brother to death. But I ain’t messing right now. We can’t talk till after the game…He texted me yesterday, and I was like, ‘I don’t want to text back’, but you know, ‘I’m going to text back’, but I can’t talk to him no more man. I can’t talk to him no more until after the game..it’s war time.”

Jackson’s words are enough to reflect the deep respect and brotherhood he shares with Vick, but game day is game day. No compromises there. Friendship will take a back seat at the Lincoln Financial Field when two coaches, not friends, will do their best for their teams.
And the excitement surrounding this game, called the “HBCU Battle of Legends,” has spread beyond conference boundaries. It’s a spectacle that unites stardom, competition, and nostalgia.
Jackson’s Hornets (5–3) have transformed from afterthoughts into contenders, while Vick, the well-known quantity, has had trouble finding rhythm with Norfolk State (1–7). If it’s Vick’s celebrity aura or DeSean’s tenacious underdog mindset, Thursday night at The Linc will test whether pure star power can still outshine substance or whether the new age belongs to coaches who, like Jackson, can build as well as they can ball.

How DeSean Jackson turned Delaware State into an HBCU powerhouse
Observing what DeSean Jackson is achieving at Delaware State almost seems unreal. The man who previously used 4.3 speed to destroy defenses is now igniting a fire beneath a program that was pretty forgotten. This club was unable to get a victory a year ago, but today they are entering hostile arenas and emerging victorious.
That victory against Central North Carolina? Just determination. It was the type of game where you could see belief building right on the sidelines in the eyes of youngsters who were tired of being overlooked. Jackson is giving them the impression that being excluded is the ideal place to start.
What makes it even more insane is how much of himself he’s invested in this. Jackson continues to speak and move like a player; his enthusiasm never wanes. He participates in every drill and every play, unlike coaches who only put on a headset and applaud from the sidelines.
“I want to be in a situation where you look up and, man, DeSean Jackson was a hell of a player, and he transitioned into being a hell of a coach,” Jackson said. “Anything I put my name on or attach my name to, my mindset is just to be successful.”
His journey from picking football over baseball as a child to becoming one of the most captivating receivers in history seems to be quite incredible. He seems to be rewriting his own legacy for the following generation.
As the stage is set for a faceoff between friends, both Jackson and Vick will try to prove they can lead from the sidelines in the same manner that they did on the field.
