Vanderbilt fans had a field day this past weekend, as the Commodores thrashed the ranked South Carolina Gamecocks 31-7. “A lot of not-good-enough football tonight. When you have that much self-inflicted mistakes, that falls on the head coach and got to get it corrected,” Shane Beamer said of the humiliating defeat. Not many expected the SEC leader to fall to the underdogs, but it was complete dominance from the Commodores in this rivalry game. Shane Beamer has got to own up to this troubling loss, after an ESPN broadcaster expressed his thoughts on the Gamecocks’ loss.

It was only the opening drive from South Carolina that got them the 7 points against Vanderbilt. The Commodores were already looking like trouble before this game, with a then record of 2-0. Diego Pavia was ruling college football when it came to the top QBs. This was the first conference play for both sides, and Vanderbilt was facing a touted winner in South Carolina. But the defense choked the Gamecocks, while the offense took advantage of the opportunities opening up. ESPN‘s Scott Van Pelt highlighted how badly this loss looks on Shane Beamer’s resume.

“Clark Lea’s team won 31-7, and that’s a big win for them. That’s a significant loss, obviously, for a South Carolina team that’s 11th. I mean, you’re trying to ascend. You can’t get beat that way at home. But, again, you lose your quarterback, and you haven’t prepared for that to be the scenario you’re going to have to try to fight through. And you’re playing Pavia and Vanderbilt.” Scott Van Pelt said in a September 14 episode of SVPod.

The run game totaled a meagre 86 yards, and the Gamecocks could only convert a third of the third downs. Backup QB Luke Doty couldn’t do enough to save Shane Beamer from such a humiliating defeat, throwing two interceptions as well. Two fumbles also came from the offense. With the offense producing in such a manner, South Carolina was an easy win for Vanderbilt.

South Carolina begins its run as an unranked bunch

South Carolina was among the programs that were considered worthy of a playoff spot last year. But this one loss against an underdog Vanderbilt, being a ranked team, has knocked Shane Beamer’s team out of the rankings altogether. In ESPN FPI’s Top 25 ranking, South Carolina gets left out after Week 3. Vanderbilt, on the other hand, breaks into the list at No. 21. Miscues ended up taking the game away from the Gamecocks. We now know that the South Carolina offense is nothing without LaNorris Sellers. Aside from that fact, the four turnovers proved extremely costly.

“I told the team at halftime we have to go out and continue to play good football because we were doing a lot of really good stuff, but I didn’t like the way we started the second half… that’s on me if we don’t take the field with the right amount of energy… It’s not good enough,” Beamer said about the game. “None of us were good enough tonight. When you get beat 31-7, no one is good enough,” he added. Beamer also remarked that 4 turnovers means it is tantamount to getting “your b—s kicked.”
