The Clemson Tigers vs. the Florida State Seminoles used to be the most anticipated game on the ACC schedule. It’s a rivalry that has provided us with some thrilling matchups over the years. This year, though, both programs have failed to rescue their respective seasons. Especially in conference play. The Clemson Tigers are 2-4, while the Seminoles are 1-4. That means the game has no stakes, which has affected its broadcasting slot.

When the Noles and the Tigers meet in Death Valley in their Week 10 game, viewers will have to go through the ACC Network rather than one of ESPN’s flagship channels. A reality check on how the sport’s decision makers now evaluate matchup worth and broadcast value. This decision by ESPN to bury the Clemson-Florida State rivalry on the ACC Network instead of on national television has enraged both fan bases.
Just months after filing lawsuits against the ACC to secure broadcast rights and fair viewership compensation. Florida State and Clemson now find their marquee rivalry buried on the ACC Network. A sad development that strips both programs of millions in potential revenue and national exposure.

As per the TV schedule for Week 10, ESPN will broadcast Georgia at MS State, JMU at Marshall, Southern Miss at A-State (ESPN2), Wake Forest at Virginia, and Cal at Louisville. The only game missing from this slate is FSU at Clemson. While the decision is somewhat justified, as the matchups that replaced it have massive playoff significance. Virginia and the Louisville Cardinals are in the hunt for playoff berths this season. Although the Clemson vs. Florida State rivalry outweighs these matchups by far in terms of fan base and viewership.
What a juxtaposition in the ACC. UVA-Wake prime time on ESPN, while FSU-Clemson relegated to ACCN. Those 2 schools sued fellow ACC members, in part, to receive a higher % of league’s media income. But if games are shown on ACCN, there are no viewership numbers for those games,…

What’s more fascinating is the disregard for the historic significance of the contest shown while taking this decision. Both of them share 6 national championships between them. It’s a matchup that has often decided playoff fates. After all, this is the game that CBS Sports in 2016 declared as “the best annual game in college football.” Meanwhile, it could have been a great game, as both teams showed glimpses of brilliance, with Florida State winning against Wake Forest 42-7 and Clemson losing narrowly to Duke 45-46.
This entire scheduling fiasco has reignited the debate around the importance of ratings over traditions. College football is entering an ultra-competitive and unpredictable era in which the Davids are increasingly winning against the Goliaths. And traditional powerhouses are becoming more grounded. Ultimately, it’s a win for the sports, but it’s still hard for fans of the big teams when something like this happens. It became more evident from the angry and disappointment-filled comments on the post.
Fans express dissent on ESPN’s decision
Fans from both Clemson and Florida State have taken to social media to express their outrage over ESPN’s decision to relegate their historic rivalry to the ACC Network instead of the national broadcasting slot. They expressed their surprise through sarcasm and humor. As one commented, “How is FSU/Clemson on ACCN??? Jesus, ESPN isn’t even trying anymore.” Calling out the broadcasters on their lack of regard for the importance of the matchup. Another pitched in with a cheeky “FSU at Clemson being on ACCN is INCREDIBLE.”

Others were surprised by the promotion of the Virginia game. “Virginia on the main 7 pm ESPN slot, what a time to be alive.” While one can sense a degree of sarcasm there, Virginia is currently sitting at the top of the conference table. At 5-0, it remains the only undefeated team in conference play after Georgia Tech was taken down in Week 9.
One fan brought up the controversy surrounding revenue sharing. “The two colleges that sued the ACC that resulted in Nielsen ratings being used in revenue sharing are facing off in a primetime game that won’t be measured by Nielsen.”
Another fan talked about the entire revenue-sharing incident at length, as he said, “What a juxtaposition in the ACC. UVA-Wake’s prime time on ESPN, while FSU-Clemson is relegated to ACCN. Those 2 schools sued fellow ACC members, in part, to receive a higher % of the league’s media income. But if games are shown on ACCN, there are no viewership numbers for those games, impacting the overall average. Also, ACC Huddle will be at UVA. Guess that’s what happens when FSU has only won 2 ACC games over the 2024-25 seasons & Clemson can’t seem to win league games at Death Valley anymore. Isn’t Karma great!! #ACC.”
When FSU and Clemson were suing the ACC, they were at the top of the ratings. But poor performances have meant reduced interest and fewer stakes. That is bound to impact their broadcast slot.
