Father, coach, and agent: Deion Sanders wore several hats for his sons, Shilo and Shedeur. But they learned the hard way that perhaps their pops wasn’t the best agent after Shedeur slid down to getting drafted in the fifth round, and his older brother didn’t get his name called. Thankfully, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed the latter as an undrafted free agent, and so, Shilo will work with the defensive-minded coach, Todd Bowles. This is a new chapter in his life, but none of it came easy. The 2025 NFL Draft wasn’t going to be easy.

After seeing Shedeur’s downward slide, Shilo knew it would be much worse for him. So, he started making some important moves. On a Twitch live stream on April 26, he joked about firing dad Deion Sanders! “Dad was our agent. But that hasn’t been working out too good. So today I had to sign with an agent. So we gonna see what happens,” Shilo announced as the rest of the family burst into laughter… except Pilar. The mother, who was standing in the background, listened carefully, read between the lines, but didn’t crack a smile at the joke. Instead, she gave a side-eye to maybe register her agreement with Shilo’s joke. It won’t be a stretch either, considering both Pilar and Deion Sanders have quite a turbulent history, and the disagreements go way back.

Shilo is 25, a lot older than many who entered the draft. He wasn’t a perfect prospect, particularly with his physical form and ability at the catch point, which could have used a lot of improvement. But all that said, his injuries while playing at Boulder and the assault lawsuit against him may have played a part. Regardless, Shilo signed with an agent on Sunday. And a brashy 59-year-old whose predatory instincts has landed him on the cover of Sports Illustrated, a first for an agent, at that.

An agent that manifests the “show me the money” hit movie catchphrase… You guessed it right, Drew “Shark” Rosenhaus. “Welcome to the family,” Rosenhaus wrote on X. And looking at Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio’s take on the matter, Rosenhaus definitely fits the bill, “Both could have benefited… For Shedeur, it would have meant having someone to push back against the drip, drip, drip of negativity that started at the Scouting Combine and continued through the draft.

“During Shedeur’s slide, an agent could have been burning up the phone lines to say whatever needed to be said to get him drafted earlier, with a contract that would have paid much more, along with a draft-pick investment that would have secured his spot on the 53-man roster.”

Historically, student-athletes weren’t allowed to have agents until their college eligibility ran out, as the NCAA regulations had strict guidelines on it. Within the era of the NIL, things shifted. Athletes, sometimes as early as high school, may hire agents to manage their contracts, but they also turn out to be invaluable sources during the draft period: Agents negotiate contracts, manage deals and endorsements, as well as show their athletes’ talents in the best way possible.

In fact, in February, murmurs were going on about how the Sanders brothers had not hired an agent. Many fans assumed that with Deion Sanders’ help, their interests would be protected. While it looked like a good approach then, we wonder what they think about it today. Regardless, while Shilo was expecting a tough time in the draft, he made sure to celebrate Shedeur’s achievement.

Is Shilo's decision to ditch dad as an agent a smart move or a risky gamble?

Shilo’s selfless act won hearts on the internet!

Amidst the media hype and speculation that surrounded Shedeur Sanders, his brother Shilo’s name and draft prospects sometimes weren’t highlighted at all. The safety didn’t even get an NFL combine invite and later seemingly failed to perform at Coach Prime’s standards. For context, Deion Sanders had challenged the player to run a 4.4 for the 40-yard dash, but the safety could only clock 4.52 seconds on his pro day. This might have led to a drop in his stock. However, he still kept at Shedeur’s side selflessly.

Shedeur waited for almost five rounds for his name to be called, but it came eventually as the Browns drafted the QB, having already drafted Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel earlier. So, just as the news became public and the announcement reached Shedeur’s family, who were following the news together, celebrations poured in.

But amongst all the people, Shilo probably was the one who seemed out of the world as he danced in joy for his younger brother. The dance went viral in a moment, with Shilo praised for his selflessness and generosity. But ‘Coach Prime’ too joined in on their celebrations. When the older Sanders brother signed with Tampa, Deion Sanders stated: “Tampa’s a wonderful spot.” This was a true representation of the Sanders’ family and especially Shilo, who, despite his own struggle, kept supporting his family all the time.
