Tom Cillo’s story is the stuff of legends. The 58-year-old powerlifter made headlines on social media when he signed an NIL deal with Lycoming College as a defensive lineman. It is not every day that you see a 50+ year old enrolling in a college football program. This begs the question: Is Tom Cillo the oldest player with an NIL deal? Facts say otherwise.

There have been other individuals who have topped Cillo on the ‘oldest CFB player’ list. At 59 years old, Mike Flynt played as a linebacker for Sul Ross State in 2007. He re-entered his alma mater and was known as the oldest NCAA collegiate football player in history at the time.  And even he was one-upped by Tom Thompson, who played as a kicker for Austin in 2009. So, there have been plenty of players who have played college football at a much older age. But does this take anything away from Cillo’s achievement? The answer is no.

While he may not be the oldest, his dedication to the game is truly inspirational. It goes without saying that entering Division III college football at his age is not an easy task, not by a mile. But Tom Cillo has faced hardships before. He attended Williamsport Area High School, where he played football briefly as a freshman before stepping away from the sport during his high school years.

Later in life, he built a working life in city services, including 33 years in the streets and parks department. Over time, he also took on the role of equipment manager back at his old high school, staying connected to athletics in a supporting role. This was before he took on powerlifting, where he would go on to smash records.

He broke the International Powerlifting Association deadlift world record for the age group 55-59 in 2024. He lifted 580 lbs in that event. Impressive as it may be, it wasn’t his only record. He also set Pennsylvania’s state deadlift record for 540 lbs in the 55-59 age group. So, it is clear to see that age hasn’t deteriorated Tom’s strength. In fact, it seems like he wants another challenge in life. From lifting weights to now lifting people up.

Why did Aspercreme choose Tom Cillo?

The campaign for the NIL deal between Tom Cillo and Aspercreme was launched just 72 hours after the deal was agreed upon. According to the brand, Cillo exemplified “their commitment to challenge stereotypes.” Aspercreme has traditionally focused its messaging on adults 55 and older, encouraging them to stay active and independent. And Cillo perfectly fits with the brand’s message, seeing his achievements in the later stages of his life.

Cillo is confirmed to get a four-year supply of Aspercreme products. He will also be involved in promoting content on social media as an ambassador for defying stereotypes about the limits of old age. His off-the-field presence will only be matched by his on-the-field antics.

He hasn’t made an appearance for Lycoming yet. The 58-year-old will be looking to showcase his talents. His size and physique will be his greatest assets. His experience in powerlifting might come in handy too!
