Can we trust Bill Belichick to remain in college football? That’s the question. That has always been the question ever since the North Carolina HC rumors began to swirl around him. The former New England Patriots HC made the big transition when he agreed to a 5-year contract as the Tar Heels HC on December 11. And just when we’re about to come to make sense of Bill Belichick’s collegiate move, his former GOAT player came in with a temptation. But then, another former NFL star believes he has reasons to stay.

Nightcap’s latest YouTube episode with Shannon Sharpe and Chad Johnson on January 9 has an interesting title — “Will Bill Belichick ditch UNC to join Tom Brady in Las Vegas?” Tom Brady is a co-owner of the Raiders, who just fired their head coach Antonio Pierce. There’s a possibility as some people speculate, but for Johnson, Bill Belichick might have some things to prove in college football. The $15 million former NFL WR said, “I think this is one of the reasons why he’s gone to the collegiate level. To show the owners, to show people that he can resonate with the younger crowd, he can resonate with the younger generation even though he has a certain coaching style. He’s going to show you that he can change, he can adapt to today’s era as today’s climate.

Chad Johnson also mentioned how younger college football HCs are in line for NFL coaching jobs. He probably meant coaches like Dan Lanning and Matt Campbell who are currently among the hot candidates to interview for the Chicago Bears’ HC job. But this only suggests that if the younger coaches can relate with the pro level, why couldn’t a 72-year-old coach change and adapt to the world dominated by players in their late teens and early 20s?

Most people couldn’t wrap their heads around the news that Bill Belichick accepted the UNC coaching job. And it’s going to come down to his adaptation ability to see if he can be part of a world many see him unfit for. Some people might have guessed that his relationship with 24-year-old GF Jordon Hudson might have opened his eyes to how the younger half lives. And maybe he liked the vibe; it’s never too old to feel young again!

The couple now lives together in North Chapel, Charlotte in a cozy home. So it’s not likely he’ll want to leave the good life behind. Besides, coming to college with eight Super Bowl wins as a coach makes him somewhat of a legend in CFB even before his career began. But the NFL temptations are only starting.

Tom Brady gives Bill Belichick hope for NFL return

Bill Belichick was struggling to find an NFL job in early 2024 and now that he’s moved on to college football, multiple NFL teams want him! According to NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero’s report, “Multiple NFL teams have inquired about whether legendary coach Bill Belichick would reconsider his move to college football – including the Las Vegas Raiders.” According to sources, Tom Brady, the Raiders’ new minority owner, spoke to his former coach of two decades about a possible reunion in Las Vegas. The Raiders fired their HC Antonio Pierce after their 4-13 season.

As always, there’s a price to pay for the move. Bill Belichick’s contract with UNC will incur him a $10 million buyout if he leaves before June 1, 2025. So, even if he intends to make a return to the NFL, he’ll get time to see if college football is for him. So it’s a less-risk contract for his personal benefit. But his decision would affect thousands of fans. Besides the Raiders, the Jacksonville Jaguars might be another alluring destination.

So, we’re back to square one. It remains unclear if Bill Belichick will remain in college football or return to the NFL. Do we have to wait till June 1st to really confirm that he’s sticking to college football at least for a season? We’ll see.
