You know there’s a $50 million man sitting in Gainesville. And he might just be one more rivalry loss away from joining the unemployment line. Losing five out of their first nine games last season was enough to ignite dismissal talks. This team just won two games against ranked opponents. No wonder it no longer even talked about firing, it became a conversation of who will be the new replacement for the HC. And now, this same narrative could be staring down at him if he fails to win the crucial games.
Billy Napier is starting the 2025 season on a very hot seat. It came to a head in Josh Pate’s latest sit-down with Corry Knowles on Flo Factory on May 21. When the host casually dropped the idea that the in-state rivalry game against Miami on September 20 is a must-win for Florida, the CBS analyst didn’t just nod, he ran with it. “I always go to the pop aspect, the proof of performance aspect,” he said. “You sell guys and sell guys and sell guys in recruiting, but eventually you’ve got to have results that you can put in front of them.” The Miami game isn’t just about pride this year, it’s about survival.

Florida’s been selling dreams in living rooms across the state, pitching kids on visions of glory. But eventually, Billy Napier’s got to show some receipts, and beating Miami is the receipt. “Because if you’re asking me to come choose Florida over Miami or Georgia or whatnot, you’re telling me I can beat those teams at Florida,” Josh Pate added. “So I’ve got to see you beat them. I’ve got to see you guys do that.” Alpha dogs want to win now, and Florida hasn’t done enough of that under this HC’s watch.

Year four. Same pressure, fewer excuses. No Dan Mullen’s fingerprints. “Whatever product you’re putting on the field, whatever the culture and identity of the program is, that’s your thumbprint on the field on Saturday,” Josh Pate added. But somehow, despite a messy 2024 season, the Gators still found themselves among the top 10 teams in his post-spring rankings. Why? Because there’s DJ Lagway, the 19-year-old QB who everyone is high on. And perhaps, it’s his presence in Florida that’s buying more time for Billy Napier, who signed a seven-year deal of over $50 million guaranteed in November 2021.

The DJ Lagway effect on Billy Napier’s future
Josh Pate didn’t hold back when asked about Billy Napier’s status. “I can’t believe he survived that,” he said with blunt honesty. Because last fall, it wasn’t if he would be fired, it’s when. “I remember some of the feedback I was getting from deep-pocketed influential people around Florida, and the message was ‘Josh, it’s going to happen, we’re just trying to figure out like, do we wait until bye-week?’” he recounted. It sure felt like a done deal, but Florida didn’t flatline. They showed fight, rattled off wins, and suddenly the HC lived to coach another day.
Because you see, when DJ Lagway stepped in for an injured Graham Mertz, he exuded future promise. He threw for 1,915 yards and 12 TDs and won all six games under his name. He even torched Tulane in the Gasparilla Bowl for 305 yards. Florida finished 8-4 after a midseason rally that pretty much saved Billy Napier’s job. And this QB might be the only thing keeping him in Gainesville after the 2025 season. But the upcoming schedule’s tough. LSU, Miami, Texas, Georgia, Tennessee, FSU, there’s no mercy.

But if Billy Napier can ride DJ Lagway’s momentum and somehow find 10 wins, Florida could be playoff-bound. If he can’t beat Miami, though, that contract might not save him.
