Fans are used to seeing Fran Brown make some eye-catching comments. He doesn’t keep the inside workings of Syracuse football under wraps; Brown boldly addressed the Trebor Pena exit, which the coach admits was because of NIL issues. Brown took the same path when it came to Umari Hatcher, and the wild few days spent between him and Syracuse football when the transfer portal was open.

Right after Christmas, Hatcher announced that he was entering the transfer portal. It made sense at that time since he’d pushed down the depth chart after being limited because of injuries. But Hatcher surprisingly withdrew from the portal in early January. Brown, after a spring practice session, threw some light on that situation.
“We were just mad at each other,” Brown said. “He left, he went and stayed at his mom’s house, then he came back.”
“I gotta make sure everybody’s being appreciated. I felt like he left because he wasn’t being appreciated the way he should have been appreciated. And it’s important that coaches and we all understand that… he taught me some lessons about appreciating everybody on the team. I do that with all the guys. Everybody feels the same… But if one of the players just says ‘I don’t feel that like I’m appreciated,’ I think how you feel is real.”
Every player demands to be treated with respect and not just as a benchwarmer. Hatcher’s decision to leave camp came after he saw a drop in production over the past three years. He had been a starting WR in 2023 and even played with former Syracuse quarterback Kyle McCord. But after tearing his PCL and LCL ligaments in a 2024 game against UConn, Hatcher has largely been off the field. In 2025, he could only play four offensive snaps. Syracuse and Hatcher both were of the view that he still wasn’t at 100% at that time, his agent, Jackson Magnini, said.
“We was just mad at each other. He left, he went and stayed at his mom’s house, then he came back.”

When Umari Hatcher entered the transfer portal, no one knew that he did so because of this underappreciation. Magnini said that other programs had also approached him, but the WR was confident about coming back to Syracuse. This is his last season of college football, which he had to seek from the NCAA on medical grounds. There are slim chances of him making it in the NFL, but this way, he can at least bow out of college football on a good note.
Fran Brown needs all hands on deck, since they are coming back after a tough 3-9 finish last year. Fortunately, Hatcher decided to come back at the right time, because a golden opportunity awaits him in the Orange WR room.
Umari Hatcher can hope for more reps this season
Orange Football hit a setback when star WR recruit Calvin Russell suffered an Achilles injury during spring camp. He has undergone surgery and will likely return by the end of this year, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported. Syracuse already has a host of receivers to make up for him, including transfers Cole Weaver, Zamondre Merriweather, Matthew Outten, and Elijah Moore. But among the in-house WRs, Umari Hatcher is the most experienced.
Over three seasons, Hatcher has recorded 797 receiving yards and seven touchdowns on 52 catches. He might have been out of the game for nearly two years, but he’s been in the system long enough to climb up from where he used to be in the depth chart. Based on what Fran Brown said about Hatcher, it looks like he’s getting ready for something big.
“It’s over a year after his ACL, so he’s flying around and making plays,” Brown told the press. “I think Umari’s doing an outstanding job leading that room. I’m very thankful for him and the Hatcher family for deciding to bring him back to play here with us.
“Sometimes when two parties don’t talk, and there’s no communication, you assume the worst. So the way that we communicated it, we were able to agree. I’m so thankful for him, and I’m happy that he’s here. I’m happy that he showed me what I wasn’t doing and what I needed to do to really make him feel appreciated.”
Fran Brown has to make up for the losses of Darren Gill, Johntay Cook, and Emmanuel Ross, who have transferred out of Syracuse. His hope now lies in the very player who luckily decided to give the program a second chance. Will this turn out to be a rewarding year for Umari Hatcher? We’ll have to wait and watch.
