Fran Brown’s plan to revive Syracuse football after last year’s 3–9 season has suffered a devastating blow before the season even began. His five-star WR was injured during spring practice, but if Brown’s words are anything to go by, a recovery timeline is already in place.

Initially, Syracuse got bad news when freshman Calvin Russell III was expected to miss the entire season due to an injury. Soon after, it was reported that he had undergone surgery for a torn Achilles tendon under the guidance of Dr. Martin O’Malley. Now, Fran Brown and the entire team are hopeful that Russell could return in late October or early November after recovery.

“We’re excited about him getting back, and we’ll just start to plan his rehab already,” Syracuse head coach Fran Brown said to the media. “You’ll see him on the field this season, just probably not at the beginning of the season, so we’ve got some time for him. He’ll probably heal pretty fast.”

Losing a player like him for half of the season could be a massive blow to the team. Calvin Russell showed his potential and skills in high school by catching 47 passes for 742 yards and scoring eight touchdowns in his senior year, proving he can make an impact in the game. He was even doing well during the spring practice, but his momentum was stopped when he suffered a non-contact injury, which often happens with Achilles tears.

Even Fran Brown praised his momentum during the practice.

“His energy is contagious, and it rubs off on the team,” Brown said. “So everybody’s excited, though, that we have him on our football team, and we’re just happy he’s here. He’d be able to go through some stuff with us, but we’re good.”

Russell had set big goals for his freshman year. He wanted to gain 1,100 yards, score 10 to 12 touchdowns, and earn ACC Freshman of the Year honors. Now, because of his injury, he might have to miss most of the season.

And that raises questions at the wide receiver position. First, the team already lost its top two receivers, Johntay Cook and Darrell Gill Jr., who transferred to Ole Miss. Then, to add depth, they got receivers like Cole Weaver, Elijah Moore, and Zamondre Merriweather. But none of these players have shown any elite-level performance, so the team will need them to improve quickly.

Despite the scare, Fran Brown has shown trust in his staff and also praised wide receiver coach Josh Gattis for developing them at the highest level.

“I think (Gattis) is one of the best in the country at what he does,” Brown said. “He’s done it for a long time. So I just like watching him at work with the guys that he has to play with. He’s done a really good job. Gattis is the truth when it comes to working these wideouts.”

The team also has returning players like Tyshawn Russell, Darius “Boobie” Johnson, and Darien Williams, so the team can make possible improvements in the WR position under coach Gattis. Now, along with Russell’s news, there came another major news.

Fran Brown doubles down on another player’s position

Syracuse wide receiver Umari Hatcher withdrew his name from the transfer portal and sought an extra year of eligibility from the NCAA. The team applied for a medical hardship waiver for Hatcher. He had suffered a serious knee injury back in 2024, tearing both the PCL and LCL during a game against UConn. The injury ended his season and left him with very little time to recover for 2025.

Hatcher returned to the team after also recovering from a previous ACL injury. The coaching staff worked closely with him to rebuild trust and clarify his role on the team. Even Fran Brown explained the entire situation after the spring practice.

“Sometimes when two parties don’t talk, and there’s no communication, you assume the worst,” Brown said. “So the way that we communicated it, we were able to be on the same page. I’m so thankful for him, and I’m happy that he’s here. I’m happy that he showed me what I wasn’t doing and what I needed to do to really make him feel appreciated.”

He had played only a few snaps in 2025 before being shut down for the season. The team and Hatcher decided it was best to pause his play so he could fully recover and prepare for a medical redshirt year. Now, with so many pieces available, Fran Brown is all set to make a massive comeback this season.
