Loyalty is a scarce virtue within the evolving dynamics around college football. But it’s a virtue LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier possesses. Despite being lower down the depth chart for 3 seasons, Nuss resisted the transfer portal. His tryst with embracing patience paid off last year, as he ascended to QB1 status. Reaping the rewards of the seeds he sowed as a backup behind Heisman Trophy winner and eventual NFL stalwart Jayden Daniels. The loyalty Nussmeier showed by staying ten toes down with LSU translates off the field, too, in his personal life.

Garrett Nussmeier’s girlfriend, Ella Springfield, graduated last fall from LSU with a degree in marketing and a concentration in sales. There aren’t redshirts in the classroom, after all! Springfield then moved out of Baton Rouge, while Nuss remained. But that hasn’t deterred the couple, who’ve maintained their relationship long-distance since. But certain occasions call for a link-up, and one such occasion just went down at the school.

Garrett Nussmeier has officially graduated! He now holds a degree in interdisciplinary studies. Naturally, Ella Springfield came down to Baton Rouge to be by her beau’s side on his big day. Nuss’ GPA isn’t publicly available, so it’s inconspicuous how well he fared. But regardless, graduating from university while balancing your athletic escapades is a massive deal in itself. Springfield sure recognizes this, taking to IG to express how proud she was

Ella Springfield took to her IG stories and posted a picture of Garrett Nussmeier grinning ear to ear, wearing his purple LSU robe and holding up his degree. “HE DID IT!!!” she wrote to accompany the picture. Springfield excitement permeates through the screen, really! That’s a big check mark for her man in his young life, as he enters his final year of collegiate sport.

It’s one more year before Garrett Nussmeier himself bids adieu to LSU and ascends to the NFL. He could’ve done so already, and admittedly weighed it up. But returning for his senior year and further honing his craft is shrewd and will only help his stock. Ella Springfield not being by his side when he plays the most pivotal season of his career is an interesting wrinkle to keep in mind. Speaking of the Nussmeier in the context of the NFL, some interesting stuff has just hit the airwaves.

Garrett Nussmeier vicariously receives some unwelcome news on the NFL front

Garrett Nussmeier is widely touted as a projected first-round pick, even a potential first-overall selection. But projected is the key, operative word here. He’s got to take a leap in terms of his play for this to transpire into reality. That said, the off-season is the breeding ground for hypotheticals and hot takes. And one such take doesn’t bode well for Nuss.

Rivals, one of the industry leaders in terms of recruit rankings, took to their IG handle and let off a way-too-early prediction for the 2026 iteration of the NFL Draft. “Drew Allar will be the first QB taken,” they wrote. Not an irrational suggestion whatsoever.  The Penn State quarterback is a physical specimen and fits the exact archetype of QB franchises yearn for. He’s been likened to Josh Allen by certain draftniks and analysts. But if Rivals is correct, it’s obviously not great news for Nussmeier.

Alas, there’s a lot of football to be played between now and that juncture. This time a year ago, absolutely nobody thought Cam Ward would be the No. 1 overall pick. This epitomizes how things and perceptions can change in this sport. Garrett Nussmeier’s been preparing for the NFL essentially all his life with his dad, Doug Nussmeier, also a former pro QB and now the offensive coordinator for the Saints. Now that he hasn’t got academics to divert his attention and focus, it’ll be intriguing to see how Nuss fares in his final year repping purple and gold.
