Can Kirby Smart and the Dawgs maintain their winning streak at home? This year, the stage is set in Athens. Sanford Stadium hasn’t seen Alabama’s crimson helmets in over a decade. So, when they finally roll into town this Saturday, it’s going to be about survival. Georgia, owner of a 33-game home win streak, are looking to defend their turf against the one opponent that has been a thorn in their paw. And as always, survival starts with who’s healthy enough to strap it up. 

Georgia’s official availability report dropped this week, and the news wasn’t kind to Kirby Smart and his squad. Per SEC’s injury report on September 24, the Bulldogs will be down by three players – TE Ethan Barbour (ankle), OL Malachi Toliver (ankle), and WR Thomas Blackshear (undisclosed). That alone thins out depth at critical spots. But the headline is OL Earnest Greene III, a starter, listed as doubtful with a back issue. 

That’s a big blow for Kirby Smart. Earnest Greene limped off during Georgia’s 44-41 overtime win against Tennessee two weeks ago and hasn’t been right since. ESPN’s Pete Thamel confirmed the report Wednesday, and the HC himself admitted there’s no clear answer on how ready his linemen truly are. “I could tell you who the best players are if they were all healthy,” he said. “But health brings that into doubt, right?” And with Alabama’s defensive front ready to tee off, that doubt is exactly what Kalen DeBoer is hoping to exploit.

Alabama’s report isn’t spotless, but it’s far less daunting. Alabama will be without linebacker Jah-Marien Latham (neck) and defensive lineman Jeremiah Beaman (knee). That stings, but the returns of starters like nose tackle Tim Keenan III and TE Danny Lewis Jr. (both probable) provide balance. Running back Jamarion Miller, who’d been nursing a collarbone issue, is also expected back. The Tide will bring plenty of firepower to Athens, even if they’re missing a couple of weapons. But injuries are only half the battle. Because when the two SEC powerhouses lock eyes across the line of scrimmage Saturday night, it will be about who makes the moment theirs.

Stakes and storylines in the Georgia vs Alabama showdown

Georgia sits as a 3.5-point favorite, according to FanDuel, but the last time the Bulldogs lost in Athens was back in 2019, 33 straight home wins ago. Alabama, sitting at 2-1 after a season-opening stumble to Florida State, has rebounded with routs of UL Monroe and Wisconsin. Still, questions remain about their offense, questions that only a hostile trip between the hedges can answer.

On the flip side, Kirby Smart believes his QB Gunner Stockton found his stride in that nail-biter against Tennessee. If he’s right, Georgia may have the playmaker to overcome Earnest Greene’s absence and keep the streak alive. And then there’s Alabama’s underdog role. “It’s gonna be a great atmosphere, great environment,” Kalen DeBoer said. “We’re looking forward to the challenge.” 

Georgia wants revenge. Alabama wants redemption. And both want to prove that their injury reports don’t define them. Saturday night in Athens will answer whether missing starters tilt the scale or whether pure SEC chaos carries the day.
