Just when head coach Deion Sanders was getting ready for a massive comeback season with the Colorado Buffaloes, a major legal storm hit his office. A longtime graphic designer has taken Coach Prime to federal court. He claims Sanders and his team used fraudulent tactics to steal rights to the famous “PRIME” and “TRUTH” logos. For fans who saw Coach Prime as a leader of absolute integrity, this fresh lawsuit is breaking their trust fast.

Reported by NFL podcaster Tony Farmer, the federal complaint was filed in a Nebraska district court against Sanders, his brand manager Sam Morini, and SMAC Entertainment. The filing accuses them of fraud, breach of contract, and unfair competition regarding iconic logos that turned into multi-million-dollar merchandise lines.

Omaha-based designer Alan Tipp worked loyally with Sanders starting back in 2011. But the real trouble began three days after Sanders landed his massive $29.5 million contract with Colorado in December 2022. According to the complaint, Sanders’ team promised Tipp big roles with Nike, Colorado football, and an exclusive sunglasses line to get him to sign away all logo rights. Once the ink was dry, Tipp claims they completely cut him out.

Tipp’s original logo designs were slapped across huge commercial deals with Nike, Amazon storefronts, and Blenders Eyewear. The famous Blenders sunglasses alone generated nearly $5 million in just three days. Feeling exploited after years of partnership, Tipp’s legal team is seeking damages in excess of $75,000 and asking the federal court to cancel Sanders’ trademark filings.

The fallout online was instant and brutal, with fans voicing deep disappointment over the allegations. One fan posted: “It seems like this whole Coach Prime thing isn’t really working out on many different levels. But maybe he can turn it around.”

“The start of the end,” another disappointed supporter added. Rather than supporting the legendary player, seeing the faith they had in him crumble is quite shocking.

The sharpest criticism came from fans who feel Sanders acts like he is above accountability. Commenting on the lawsuit updates, one frustrated fan wrote, “This is why he locked down practice! He needs to grow up! Way too self-important!”

Right before the lawsuit went public, Sanders completely shocked reporters by imposing a sudden, strict media access ban during open practices. Initially, everyone thought that it was just a way to protect his playbook. However, following the lawsuit, critics and fans are pointing out that this tight campus security and media silence were likely coordinated. It might have been an effort to shield himself from legal servers and tough questions from the press.

The man who disclosed the news himself, Tony Farmer, commented on his post with, “Think he’s still coaching next year?” The core of the legal battle centres heavily on what happened exactly three days after Coach Prime became the HC of the Buffs.

For a coach who constantly preached loyalty and doing things the right way, exploiting a long-time partner for corporate gain is being viewed as deeply hypocritical. Fans are finding it difficult to reconcile his pious public image with these aggressive business tactics.
