On Saturday, Illinois started the game a little slowly against Western Michigan and only led 10-0 at halftime. Western Michigan was keeping things tight, particularly when it came to stopping Illinois’ passing attack. However, the Broncos found it difficult to stay up once Illinois settled in, particularly on the ground. Illinois gained control of the game as it went on, turning it into a 38-0 victory at the end. But despite the comfortable win, Illinois can’t ignore the growing list of injuries that can impact its depth further in the season.

In a post-game presser, Bret Bielema addressed the injury concerns after the game. “Injury-wise, I know Xavier (Scott) at the end, Melvin (Priestly) at the end, but I don’t expect anything there.” he said. For a moment, it looked like Illinois might be dealing with a major setback. Xavier Scott went down hard on his ankle while breaking up a pass, and the sight was enough to hush the sideline. Fortunately, the scare didn’t turn into something serious. Melvin Priestly hasn’t been as lucky. Two injury scares in the opening three games raise concern, even with Illinois’ depth at the position.

But Justin Bowick was the bigger worry “J-Bow (Justin Bowick), we did lose him in the first half there, so I don’t know exactly where we’re at with him.” The team has taken precautions and is monitoring his development before determining how he will contribute going forward. Also, Bielema talked about Dylan Roseak and Aiden Laughrey, two players who missed important practice days earlier in the week. “Aidan Laughery and Dylan Rosiek, on Wednesday, we ran them and they just weren’t right where we needed them to be. And then Thursday, we kind of ruled them out,” he explained. “I do expect to have them back this weekend to Indiana,” he says, expressing a sense of hope.

Bielema made it clear that Illinois is attempting to maintain its positive attitude and not allow injuries to stop them from moving forward in spite of these setbacks. After the game, he told Luke Altmyer, “Whatever we got to do, however we need to do it,” stressing that both players and coaches must take responsibility.

It is a reminder that although injuries are inevitable in sports, the team’s priorities are player recovery and returning players when they’re ready, not hurrying them before they’re completely recovered. Coach Bielema thinks the team will remain competitive going into their next Big Ten game because of their willingness to change, adapt, and help one another through these difficult times.

Despite injuries, key players step up in a dominating win

After struggling in the first half, Illinois found its rhythm and easily defeated Western Michigan 38-0. They entered the game hoping to maintain their undefeated start. The Illini needed a goal-line stand at the end of the half to maintain the clean slate because they were only 10-0 at the half. When questioned about that slow start, coach Bret Bielema didn’t mince words: “I can’t repeat what I said at halftime… I was probably as spirited as I’ve ever been at halftime during my time at Illinois.” Even with the lead, he made it clear that letting the first half slip away wasn’t acceptable to him.

The game’s outcome was significantly influenced by injuries. Despite his ankle injury that forced him to leave the game in the fourth quarter, Xavier Scott had an outstanding performance. He helped stop Western Michigan’s passing game with his final three tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, and two pass breakups. Senior linebacker Kenenna Odeluga filled in for injured star Dylan Rosiek, stuffing the tight end to keep the shutout intact in a spectacular stop on fourth-and-goal. Kaden Feagin, who replaced Aidan Laughery in the backfield after he was injured, was also praised by Bielema. Bielema made a joke about how dominant Feagin appeared after rushing for 100 yards and a touchdown, saying, “You’ve got to make a business decision when you go to tackle Kaden.”
