Brent Venables and the Oklahoma Sooners are living the best-case scenario possible. When the Sooners entered the season, there were plenty of doubts about them. They were given the toughest schedule in all of college football, alongside Billy Napier’s Florida Gators. However, the Gators crumbled under the pressure, sitting at a 1-3 record heading into Week 5, while Oklahoma is 4-0. Nobody expected this to happen. The Sooners are doing everything except one thing. They are literally ranked 135th in that statistic. GM Jim Nagy isn’t stressed about it and promised that when it rains, it pours.

There isn’t any major concern the Sooners need to be aware of. Their 4-0 record speaks for itself. However, one odd statistic comes up when you look at their defense, specifically forcing turnovers. They are ranked dead last (136th) in the FBS in defensive turnovers forced. On September 22, college football analyst SEC Mike pointed this out on Twitter (X): “Oklahoma is the only team in the country that has yet to force a turnover on defense. The other 135 teams in the nation have all forced at least one turnover. Hard to be 4-0 with a -6 turnover margin, but the Sooners have accomplished it.”

Even teams like Florida Atlantic and Charlotte have forced at least one defensive turnover. Sooners GM Jim Nagy wasn’t worried at all. He reposted SEC Mike’s stat with confidence, saying, “When they come, they usually come in bunches.” Truth be told, Jim Nagy wasn’t exaggerating here.

Look at Week 4, in their game against No. 22 ranked Auburn Tigers. Sooners’ front seven took QB Jackson Arnold to sack city, recording 10 sacks which is also a school record. In simple words, they just ran out of time. If it wasn’t for the final drive, Sooners might have registered a forced turnover.

When it comes to the running defense, the Sooners are top 10 in the nation, giving up just 89 rushing yards and 118.5 passing yards per game, ranking seventh overall. Thanks to Venables’ defensive play-calling, Oklahoma is back in the AP Top 10 at No. 7. Even their offense is cooking under the play-calling of Ben Arbuckle.

John Mateer has been carrying the offense, throwing for 1,215 yards and adding another 190 on the ground. His dual-threat style has kept defenses on their toes, and he now has a streak of 10 games with both a passing and rushing touchdown. Looking ahead, they’ll take on Kent State on October 4, and you better believe Brent Venables’ defense will be hungry to force a defensive turnover.

Sooners coach warns the other teams on their schedule

Oklahoma Sooner’s and Mason Thomas were having a field day against Auburn. The Sooners DL only needed two plays to remind his opponent who they were dealing with. After sitting the first half on suspension, the All-SEC defensive end came flying in for a tackle on Xavier Chaplin, then later closed the night with a bull-rush through 320-pound Mason Murphy to bury quarterback Jackson Arnold for a safety. That was sack number nine for OU, tying a single-game program record, and the dagger in a 24-17 Sooners win.

The defensive line has turned into a flat-out problem for opponents. Oklahoma piled up 13 tackles for loss, six different players grabbed sacks, and Auburn was stuck at 3-for-15 on third downs. Sophomore Jayden Jackson was another nightmare, recording 2.5 sacks and tearing through double teams like they weren’t even there.

Afterward, defensive line coach Miguel Chavis didn’t hold back. Taking to X, he fired off a message that Sooners fans ate up: “There ain’t a greater joy as a coach than watching your guys reap what they’ve sown! Keep going @thomss_r. They ain’t seen nothing yet dawg.” Based on Chavis’ warning, the Sooners defense is going to feast against Kent State. Even Auburn HC Hugh Freeze had to acknowledge the skill when he said, “I do think that’s one of the better pass rushing teams in the country.”
