When Kalen DeBoer took the reins at Tuscaloosa, he knew he was stepping into a job with pressure to maintain that winning standard set by Nick Saban. In his first two seasons, his teams showed flashes of brilliance, but Alabama still fell short of the ultimate prize. Now entering his third season with the Tide, and with rumors of other programs sniffing around, the coach has a definitive message for anyone questioning his long-term commitment to Alabama.

“I knew what I was getting into when I came here. Alabama was the only place that was going to take me away from what was a great job at Washington,” DeBoer told On3’s Chris Low. “There’s noise everywhere you coach. There was at Sioux Falls and Fresno State, not like this obviously. But wherever you are, you block that out.

“I’m excited about the future here and what we’ve done in our last two recruiting classes. Considering we’ve only been together for two years, we’re pushing to get over that hump.”

In 2024, DeBoer’s debut season at Alabama was a period of transition. While the Tide beat Georgia, it also suffered tough losses to Vanderbilt and Oklahoma. To make matters worse, the Crimson Tide missed both the SEC title game and the CFP. They ended that year with a 19–13 loss to Michigan and a 9–4 overall record.

Last year, the Tide opened the season with a loss against FSU. Then their narrow regular-season loss to Oklahoma, 21–23, only raised concern, while a 7–28 loss to Georgia ended their hope for an SEC championship. Yet Alabama showed strong dominance in regular-season wins over Georgia, Vanderbilt, and Tennessee.

But their national title hopes ended with a 3–38 loss against Indiana in the CFP quarterfinal. Still, there was no doubt about the Alabama head coach’s potential. That’s why when Michigan terminated Sherrone Moore’s employment, many linked DeBoer to the head coaching job. But the coach shut down all with his firm commitment to Alabama. Kalen DeBoer not only clarified that he has no interest in outside noise but also made his feelings clear as Saban’s successor at Alabama.

“I never talked to anyone, not one time. I just don’t know how you could live with yourself and look into your players’ eyes if you’re looking at other opportunities in the midst of the season and getting ready for a playoff game and hopefully making a run at a national championship. So it was a pretty easy decision not to engage with them,” said DeBoer.

“I didn’t come here to follow Coach Saban only to turn around after two years and go somewhere else. I mean, this is Alabama. I’m at an amazing place. That’s the way I was looking at it. I chose to be here. I love the support and love our players and love the direction and everything the staff has done to put the pieces together here over the last two years.”

Now, the Alabama head coach is ready to make the 2026 season count. That confidence signals a significant opportunity, given the program’s history. Saban won his first national title at Alabama in 2009, which was his third season. For DeBoer, whether that happens or not, only time will tell the full story. But the coach isn’t going anywhere, at least for now.

Kalen DeBoer’s unshakable loyalty to Alabama

Before joining Alabama, Kalen DeBoer led the Huskies to a 25–3 record over two seasons. In fact, in his first head-coaching role at his alma mater, he compiled a dominant 67–3 record and won three NAIA National Championships. So, DeBoer knows the way of winning, and that’s why programs showed interest in him for their head coaching job.

But the Alabama head coach never indulged, stating, “That’s funny. I’ve been told that many, many times. There’s always going to be that noise out there, but what I’m proudest of is that our players and coaches never allowed it to be a distraction.”

However, the most intriguing fact is that DeBoer faced criticism because of his debut season at Alabama and even faced a hit last season too. Despite that, many powerhouses believed in the coach. The Tide coach is still loyal to Alabama.

“There are so many great programs around the country, right?” said DeBoer. “There’s no disrespect to any one particular program, but I just enjoy what we have here and grateful for what we have here and the journey we’re on and what lies ahead for us.”
