It’s DJ Lagway vs Carson Beck. A full-blown primetime stress test for Florida. Heading into Hard Rock Stadium, the Gators are limping in at 1-2, bruised by back-to-back losses to USF and LSU. The QB’s five-interception nightmare against the Tigers didn’t help and penalties continued to plague Billy Napier’s squad. Now, there’s one particular ESPN voice not pleased with the offense and he didn’t mind blasting it out on national TV.

Kirk Herbstreit and the College GameDay crew happened to be in Miami when Billy Napier’s offense took a hit against the Hurricanes. “You’ve got nobody that’s competing on that side of the ball,” the analyst said on live TV. His comments were shared across social media with one X post highlighting his frustration. “Somebody get upset…Get physical,” he urged. And that’s hard to hear if you bleed orange and blue.

By halftime, the no. 4 Hurricanes had already made a statement. 13-0. The Gators managed a grind total of 32 yards in the first quarter with only 1.5 yards per play. Negative plays on the first three snaps set the tone. If you blinked, you missed the offense entirely. Kirk Herbstreit’s frustration was palpable. “I thought the Gators might try to work the clock, get the hell out of here, but apparently not,” he snapped.

Meanwhile, Carson Beck is cruising. Miami’s offense, bolstered by Mario Cristobal in Year 4, racked up 198 yards in the half with 100 on the ground alone. All of this despite enduring six pre-snap penalties. Field goals, not touchdowns, were the only things keeping the scoreboard modest but the dominance was clear. Last season’s 41-17 dismantling of Florida is starting to look like a preview. Vegas has the ‘Canes as 7.5-point favorites, and at this rate, that feels conservative. As Florida’s offensive woes continued under the glaring Miami lights, all eyes turned to DJ Lagway and whether he could turn the tide.

DJ Lagway needed to step up for Billy Napier and Florida

DJ Lagway and Florida’s offense had little room for error against a red-hot Miami squad, now 3-0 and averaging 38 points per win against Notre Dame and USF. In contrast, UF’s 1-2 start saw just 13 points per game, with the QB averaging a modest 6.21 yards per attempt, down from last season’s 10.0 mark that ranked second nationally. Injuries haven’t helped. Shoulder and calf issues delayed his preseason work, and he didn’t take first-team snaps in 11-on-11 drills until mid-August.

At LSU, DJ Lagway threw 49 passes, a career high. But five interceptions and a pick-six in the third quarter ended Florida’s hopes. Most picks came on third downs. The final interception was in the red zone with 2:15 remaining which sealed the Gators’ fate. Against Miami, through 30 minutes, Florida’s offense stalled. By the end of the game, Lagway had completed just 12 of 23 passes for a measly 61 yards, and the team went 0-for-13 on third downs. Final score: 26-7.

Billy Napier’s seat is red hot. Florida’s offensive line is gasping, DJ Lagway’s confidence is being tested, and Kirk Herbstreit’s on-air frustration tells you everything you need to know. This Gators team might just be looking at a long and painful season ahead.

What’s your perspective on:

With Herbstreit calling them out, will the Gators finally step up and prove him wrong?
