The Aggies were this close to tasting the dust at their home turf against a 3-6 South Carolina. They trailed 3-30 at half, but then something switched. Marcel Reed suddenly remembered that he’s an elite playmaker. Texas A&M scored 28 unanswered points to win 31-30. Reed showed why he’s a Heisman contender, but even amid the celebrations, the QB is aware of what’s at stake.

Post-game, when Marcel Reed was asked about his Heisman, he had a fitting reply. “We are focused on winning games right now.” Every Saturday, game implications fluctuate Heisman rankings. The QB knows it and is least bothered by it. What matters is their record.

As for the game, it was truly a take of two halves. Since the first possession of the first quarter, Texas A&M struggled to pick up the pace. With a 19-yard gain, the Aggies got a fresh set of downs, but the offense struggled to keep the chain moving. On 3rd & 12, Marcel Reed was sacked for a loss of eight yards by Bryan Thomas Jr. However, on the next play, they were successful in lodging a 40-yard field goal. 3-3, it was a tie.

But what’s got the chains rattling is the fact that the Aggies’ defense, which ranks No. 6 in total defense in the SEC, allowed two touchdowns by LaNorris Sellers, first with a 50-yard touchdown pass. Another score came up when on 2nd & 10, Reed was sacked on the 17-yard line by Dylan Stewart for a 10-yard loss. That wasn’t the only woe. Reed fumbled the ball, recovered by Nick Barrett, and was returned for a touchdown. As the clock bled into the second quarter, the Gamecocks had the upper hand, 17-3.

In the next fifteen minutes, Reed’s offense did not see much action, as the scoreboard still pointed to three points. Arguably, if the situation was bad during the first fifteen minutes, it got worse during the second quarter. The Aggies went three and out. It was followed by a missed field goal and two interceptions.

It seemed an upsetting start. But Marcel propelled his team to a 31-30 close contest.

It was an awful first half, but the Aggies, filled with the confidence that propelled them to eight consecutive wins, were yet to call it a day. During the third quarter, on 4th &12, Reed launched himself into a 16-yard run, leading to a touchdown two plays later. “I didn’t know where I was on the field, but I knew I had to get somewhere. Glad I got the first down. We went temp, and it kind of wore them down,” he shared on reviving the offense.

In their next possession, he threw another 39-yard  touchdown pass to Bethel Roman, gaining steam. 17-30.
