The stadium, valued at an estimated $862 million, is projected to be ready for use at the start of the 2026 college football season. That timeline means Northwestern will play its final two home games at Wrigley next week against Michigan and Minnesota. So, the Wildcats and HC David Braun will look to make these last games memorable for the Northwestern faithful.

Wrigley Field is the iconic home of MLB’s Chicago Cubs. The Cubs have long partnered with the Northwestern Wildcats, sharing the stadium for select football games. They acknowledged Northwestern’s upcoming departure from Wrigley Field, saying, “As a proud, long-standing partner of Northwestern Athletics, we congratulate the University on the soon-to-be launch of their new stadium and wish them great success.

Inside the Wildcats’ relationship with Wrigley Field

Given the history between the two, it is hard to rule out that this season will be the last time we will see the Wildcats play at Wrigley. The Wildcats played their first game at Wrigley Field in 1923. The reason was that Northwestern’s home stadium only had 10,000 capacity. Northwestern opened Ryan Field in 1926, making it its home for years to come.

However, Northwestern made its presence known at Wrigley from time to time, playing six times in total. They came back to the iconic Cubs stadium after 80 years, where they faced off against Illinois. That game was heavily publicized due to the proximity of the brick outfield wall to the east end zone, which necessitated an NCAA rule requiring all offensive plays for both teams to be directed toward the same end zone.

The game resulted in the renovation of Wrigley Field, dubbed the 1060 project, and fixed the issue. This allowed Northwestern to host four more games at the stadium since 2021. And now, they take on Michigan and Minnesota next week. A victory in both of those games would serve as a fitting final chapter in Northwestern’s legacy at Wrigley Field.
