Hugh Freeze’s stint at Auburn ended on the worst note possible. Following a 31–10 blowout loss to Kentucky, the Tigers fell to 4-5 overall and 1-5 in SEC play, effectively ending their playoff hopes and leaving bowl eligibility in serious jeopardy. Naturally, the fallout extended beyond the field, as several commits are reportedly reconsidering their futures amid the chaos. And this situation could prove beneficial to other SEC rivals.

Among them is Leakesville (Miss.) Greene County wide receiver Jase Mathews, a five-star prospect in the 2026 class. With Freeze’s sudden departure, the Tigers’ prized pledge admits his disappointment over the entire stance. “Oh man, I got to process that for a little bit,” the Greene County standout said. “That’s crazy. That’s unfortunate. But I think I’m going to take it in a good way. I liked Freeze, but anything to improve the program is great. Just keep on taking it the way I’ve been, day by day, not letting it affect my choice too much but keeping my head on a swivel.”
Coaching turnover always brings uncertainty, and even the strongest commitments can waver. Mathews acknowledged that he’s keeping his options open following the coaching change. “Under these circumstances, I’ll probably contact other schools.” An interesting part of Mathews’ situation is how connected he still is to those programs. Despite his Auburn pledge, the wideout maintains steady communication with the schools that once recruited him heavily.“I talk to them all every now and again,” Mathews added.

LSU’s own instability, following the firing of Brian Kelly, may remove one option from Mathews’ shortlist. That dynamic gives an edge to Texas A&M, whose unbeaten 8-0 start under Mike Elko has become one of the season’s biggest stories. “The way they’ve been dynamic this season. They showed what they told me they were going to do this summer.” Mathews said.

But let’s not forget that Ole Miss is also in title contention this season, and Lane Kiffin’s experience working with wide receivers strengthens the Rebels’ case. During his time as a position coach and coordinator, Kiffin helped develop standout NFL receivers such as Robert Woods and Marqise Lee, both of whom flourished under his guidance. Adding to that pedigree, Ole Miss recently brought former Rebel Donte Moncrief onto its staff. Moncrief, who caught 156 passes for 2,371 yards and 20 touchdowns during his college career, went on to play seven seasons in the NFL, bringing valuable experience and name recognition to Oxford. It’s easy to see why the Rebels would make a push for Mathews.

Despite missing most of this season with a torn ACL, the Greene County star still managed to appear in three games, recording 9 receptions for 194 yards and 2 touchdowns, along with 57 rushing yards on four carries. As a junior, he turned heads with 68 catches for 1,138 yards and 15 touchdowns, establishing himself as one of the top playmakers in the 2026 class.
But for now, Mike Elko’s team is making major recruiting moves.

Mike Elko’s Aggies land 2027 safety player
With Mathews’ recruiting development, Texas A&M is dominating the recruiting trail with the addition of a major piece to their 2027 class. Safety Kamarui Dorsey announced his commitment to Mike Elko’s team. His commitment marks another victory for Aggies as Dorsey becomes the 5th commit in A&M’s 2027 class.
After his addition, the Aggies are now ranked 3rd in the 2027 recruiting cycle. This shows Elko’s dominance in recruiting top talent. But what pushed Dorsey’s decision? After witnessing the Aggies’ 31-9 victory over Mississippi State and the LSU Tigers, their defensive unit left a lasting impression on him.

Getting Dorey into the program is a massive win for the Aggies, too, as in his freshman season in 2023, he recorded 49 total tackles and three interceptions. His physicality and instincts make him a perfect fit for the Aggies’ defensive unit. Now, let’s wait and see if Aggies get another massive commitment later on for their 2026 class.
