Six games into the season and Texas A&M proved that the players are always prepared. After the Aggies’ last win against Missouri in Week 6 with QB Connor Weigman as the sole starter, it wouldn’t be surprising if he gets to start the next game too. But before we get carried away, HC Mike Elko’s words on both the QBs following the game only takes the QB suspense higher.

Following their big 41-10 win against Missouri, Mike Elko gave a “culture” talk in the locker room as seen in an X post on October 10. Despite Marcel Reed not getting any action in the last victory, the HC credited both his QBs equally. After the cheers died down following his mention of Connor Weigman, he also added, “I’m gonna say this too. Marcel Reed. Where you at? Because here’s culture. Culture is coming in when your names call, leading us to 3-0 making it an extremely difficult decision deciding to go back with our starter.

Connor Weigman started the first two games with a 1-1 record before sitting out for the next three games due to an AC joint injury incurred in the season opener loss against Notre Dame. Redshirt freshman Marcel Reed took the starting role with three consecutive wins before returning the role to Weigman who won them their fifth win of the season.

With Reed becoming a fan-favorite with his freshman skills, Elko admitted to facing dilemma choosing between the two players to start. He also sung high praise of his backup QB saying, “Him not flinching, him being an unbelievable energy source, him being prepared if we needed him today, and him just being a great part of this program. I know he’ll be ready.” There’s no reason why we wouldn’t be seeing more of Reed who has already become a huge part of their wins so far.

Texas A&M QBs takes pressure off of Mike Elko

Connor Weigman may have generated concerns after his injury and poor play at the beginning of the season. So when Marcel Reed took over and outplayed him, his return as the starter was shrouded in dilemma. Reed appeared in four games and started in three securing a total of 585 yards and six touchdowns with no interceptions. In addition to the passing game, he added 42 carries for 230 yards for two scores.

But Connor Weigman isn’t done. He made a strong comeback with his dominant 41-10 victory over the Tigers by recording 276 yards and five carries for 33 yards. Following the game, Mike Elko praised Weigman saying, “This kid’s a winner. He’s a competitor. He does everything he needs to do for Texas A&M football.” Hopefully, no more injuries are on the horizon. But even if they unfortunately do, Mike Elko can sleep easy knowing his players have it all covered.
