With four games left, Texas A&M’s first College Football Playoff berth under second-year coach Mike Elko is within reach. But this bye week brought a rare twist. Between film sessions and practice reps, Elko dropped a surprise announcement, demonstrating his ability to manage his personal life, in addition to leading one of the country’s biggest programs. While it looks like a well-earned pause before the final push against a talented Missouri squad, it also comes with a family celebration.

During Thursday’s appearance on The Paul Finebaum Show, Mike Elko talked about his team’s progress this season, and in between, he revealed a surprise. “We’ll give our coaches this Saturday off,” said Elko. It’s definitely a thoughtful reward for the staff whose day-and-night efforts have helped the Aggies make history twice this season – first by beating Arkansas, then LSU.
But the most mesmerizing part? That off day just happens to be a big one for the Elko family, as it’s his wife Michelle’s birthday. “The positive this week is Saturday is my wife’s birthday,” added Elko. Birthdays bring celebration.

“So I’ll get to take my wife out to dinner in the fall, which is a big thing in the Elko household,” said the A&M HC. Moreover, Elko’s wife is definitely a big part of his life, not just for her unwavering support, but for her deep devotion to Texas A&M. Remember a few weeks ago, when reporters questioned Elko about the PSU coaching rumors?
He replied, “Talk to the boss lady about where we might be going,” humorously referring to Michelle, who could be heard in the background saying, “We’re not going anywhere.”

Her bond with Texas A&M runs deep, so deep that even an off day feels like a celebration across Aggie Nation. From the moment Mike Elko was named HC to now, Michelle’s love for the program and pride in her husband have only grown stronger. When the team ended a 31-year wait by staying undefeated at 7-0, she wasted no time showing her pride. “Homecoming Mama… But Proud Aggie Wife?!” she posted, flashing a chain with a pendant that read “ELKOERA.” It’s a perfect symbol of a family and a fan base riding high together.

However, when it comes to Michelle’s support for Mike Elko, words hardly do it justice. Their story began as college sweethearts at Penn State, and after the wedding, life took them to the USMMA: the first stop in a long coaching journey. Since then, Elko’s coaching career has taken the family on many adventures, but she has been a constant source of support. Her presence on game days is pure fuel for that fire.
Now, with her birthday aligning perfectly with the team’s bye week, Elko gets a chance to return the favor, and he’s making the most of it. But while he’s busy with personal matters, his focus on the team hasn’t wavered.

Mike Elko speaks out with conviction
Texas A&M is no longer just playing games. As the bye week hits, they sit at 8-0, and the Aggies are firing on all cylinders. It’s safe to say that under Mike Elko, the program has transformed. With discipline meeting swagger, this is a team with eyes on the prize: the SEC title and a CFP berth. But that culture shone brightest after Saturday’s 49-25 win at LSU.
Here, Elko’s locker room speech spoke volumes. “We wanted a championship. We wanted to compete for [the SEC Championship]. We wanted to be in the playoffs. We’re 8-0 — we still haven’t accomplished jack sh– yet in that regard… First half, we almost gave this one away. We’ve got to be our best consistently, every single play… I couldn’t be more proud of how we handled that second half.”
Yes, the game against LSU wasn’t flawless, according to Elko, with missed opportunities and an 18-14 lead at halftime. However, the team made up for it in the second half. But the Aggies aren’t just racking up wins.
Their offensive and defensive lines gave it everything, and now, heading into the Missouri game, Elko’s strict locker room message makes one thing clear: mistakes won’t be repeated simply because the coach left nothing to chance.
