Mike Norvell has been through the grinder. After guiding Florida State to a resurgent campaign in 2024, the program’s sharp fall to a 2-10 record sent shockwaves through Tallahassee. Norvell didn’t waste a second licking wounds—he hit the transfer portal with surgical precision, landing 16 players during the winter signing window. After 13 spring practices and a full audit of his revamped roster, Norvell emerged with clarity and intent: the rebuild isn’t finished. He made it clear that a few more additions were necessary to plug key gaps. And now, as whispers grow louder about a top-tier offensive weapon on the radar, the Seminoles might be one decision away from making a serious statement.
Enter Gavin Sawchuk. The Oklahoma transfer RB is the headliner Mike Norvell has been eyeing this spring. According to On3, “Gavin Sawchuk started his career at Oklahoma in 2022, totaling 977 yards and 11 touchdowns in three seasons with the Sooners. His decision to leave the Sooners came after OU added Cal running back Jaydn Ott in the portal.” Sawchuk’s journey in Norman was a blend of flashes and frustrations, primarily due to injuries and a crowded backfield. Yet the upside remains tantalizing. If they get this weapon FSU will be more than happy.
He started 11 games during his time at OU, including four in 2024. With the Sooners adding depth and Sawchuk seeking a more prominent role, the fit at Florida State looks logical. “Sawchuk visited Florida State on Friday and wants to make a decision quickly,” On3 reported, adding, “The Seminoles feel like they sit in a good spot… Confidence Level: Medium.” West Virginia and Michigan State are also in the race, but the buzz in Tallahassee is growing.

While Sawchuk would be a potentially game-changing addition, Mike Norvell has already locked in a key piece on the other side of the ball. Defensive back Jarvis Boatwright Jr., a redshirt freshman transfer from USC, officially joined the Noles, and Norvell made sure to celebrate it. “I’m excited to bring Jarvis back to his home state and into the Nole Family,” Norvell said. Boatwright, a Lakeland native, brings versatility and depth to a secondary that’s undergone a lot of reshuffling. A hybrid safety with solid closing speed and high football IQ, he’ll be a key name to watch as FSU looks to reclaim its defensive identity.
Boatwright was one of five additions during the spring window, and each one feels handpicked for a specific need. Norvell added QB Jaylen King, a junior from East Tennessee State, who will bolster the QB room with maturity and reps. On the line, he brought in Josh Raymond, a redshirt freshman from Vanderbilt, and Ja’Elyne Matthews, a promising young OT out of Rutgers. And rounding out the defensive backfield alongside Boatwright was veteran CB Jeremiah Wilson, a senior with stops at Syracuse and Houston. Wilson, who played his high school ball at Kissimmee Osceola, offers experience and SEC-level twitch, helping patch up a corner unit that struggled in 2024.
While the portal frenzy makes headlines, what’s been quietly overlooked is FSU’s activity, or lack thereof, at wide receiver. After a 2024 season that left much to be desired in terms of explosive plays downfield, some assumed Norvell would aggressively target a WR1-type via the portal. That hasn’t happened yet. Despite the gains elsewhere, questions linger about who steps into that vertical threat role.
Reload, not rebuild, Mike Norvell keeps cool amid FSU WR exodus
Florida State fans felt the sting this offseason as the Seminoles saw three wide receivers hit the transfer portal. Including big-name departures like five-star Hykeem Williams and speedster Jalen Brown. To add to the shuffle, junior-college standout Jordan Scott, who joined the team in January, also packed his bags after spring ball. But HC Mike Norvell? He’s not panicking.

Norvell spoke candidly about the state of the receiver room and made it clear this was more about roster math than any sort of meltdown. “We were over at the number,” he said. “There had to be some real conversations. At the end of the day, really nothing happened that I can say was just absolutely unexpected at that position.”
This was always a possibility. “It’s a challenge. It’s competition. Then you gotta go do it too,” Norvell added, hinting that those who stayed showed they could battle through the grind. He’s confident in the fresh faces who joined the team earlier this year. “I’m really pleased with some of the newcomers that joined the program in January, and I really believe that the growth of guys that have been here.”

From shopping, former Tennessee receiver Squirrel White and former USC TE Duce Robinson, who will play receiver for the Seminoles. Those two should immediately step in as the primary options. Florida State also brought back some players from last year’s team. Former four-star receiver Lawayne McCoy is potentially in for a bigger role as well as Elijah Moore. Losing stars hurts.
