Mike Norvell bet big for Florida State football. Will the Noles return the favor? With DJ Uiagalelei’s unexpected announcement to enter the 2025 NFL Draft, the Noles were left scrambling for solutions. But in college football, there’s always a way forward, especially when you’re one of the highest-paid head coaches in the sport. For Norvell, money is secondary right now. Not after a brutal 2-10 season left his job hanging by a thread. But if you ask him, a rebuild is already underway.

Florida State just wrapped a solid recruiting class, signing three players on National Signing Day. In his appearance on Rivals Video on February 6, Mike Norvell made it clear that this year’s haul could spark a turnaround. “We have an opportunity ahead,” the elated coach stated. “And we’re really excited about the guys that we’ve been able to bring in. We signed 23 guys from high school ranks, a couple of junior college players, and then you have 16 transfers. I believe we’ve been able to address a lot of needs.”

FSU locked in commitments from DB Antonio Cromartie Jr., OLs Chavez Thompson, and Chastan Brown. Per 247Sports’ Composite rankings, the Noles rounded up a top-19 recruiting class with 23 commits and 16 portal commits, putting them just behind Miami in the ACC. The class featured two top-100 players — DL Kevin Wynns and RB Ousmane Kromah. But Mike Norvell is especially excited about what could happen in the QB position after DJ Uiagalelei.

FSU has backup QB Brock Glenn, who appeared in seven games in 2024, starting in five. The two-year Nole QB completed 51% of his passes for 597 yards and four TDs. But Norvell has his eyes on Boston College transfer QB Thomas Castellanos. “I think Tommy is an elite player when it comes to his movements. Obviously, the ability to push the b— down the field I think he throws a big deep b— really well… His touchdown-interception ratio was extremely high, and we think he’s going to be a great fit for what we’re looking to continue to do.

The junior QB threw for 1,366 yards and 18 touchdowns to just five interceptions in seven games played in 2024. A diamond in the rough, but is he the hidden gem that could honor Mike Norvell’s sacrifice and save his job?

Mike Norvell is serious about changing FSU’s fortune

Last spring, Mike Norvell signed a massive $9.9 million contract. In December, he slashed his salary in half. He took a major pay cut by agreeing to a one-year restructured contract that saw a 50% dip in his annual salary to $4.5 million. All this is for the greater good of the Noles football as part of the program’s new Vision of Excellence. It’s a campaign to raise funds for revenue sharing with athletes under the new House settlement, which allows Division I schools to share at least $20.5 million with their athletes. Norvell believes in the mission, but belief alone won’t save his job.

Fans endured a nightmare season, watching FSU drift away from relevance. More than once, Mike Norvell received high pressure with his inability to win not just big games, but any game at all. He’s sitting on a $63M buyout, but how long can that shield him from the hot seat? If this new roster delivers, he might just get the redemption arc he’s seeking.

Time will tell if the players who benefited from Mike Norvell’s sacrifice can deliver where it matters — the field. If not, this could be the calm before a storm in Tallahassee.
