The worst move any recruiter could pull is going behind the back after giving word of commitment, and unfortunately, that’s exactly what the nation’s No. 1 recruit, DJ Jacobs, is doing right now. The Georgia native just landed in South Beach, and it’s not remotely looking nice for OSU and Ryan Day. According to some analysts and instincts, the Miami Hurricanes might once again beat Ryan Day in 2026.

On April 2nd, ‘Recruits CFB’ hopped onto their X handle and confirmed that DJ Jacobs is visiting the Miami Hurricanes this weekend (April 3-5). Despite his shocking verbal commitment to Ohio State on December 29, it seems like Mario Cristobal and his staff aren’t taking “no” for an answer. In fact, Miami was actually the heavy favorite to land him for months until the very last minute when Jacobs informed Buckeyes coach Ryan Day of his decision.
When the undisputed top prospect schedules a sudden out-of-state trip months after verbally pledging allegiance, it’s never just a vacation. Jacobs’ Miami visit directly threatens his OSU commitment. Given the Hurricanes’ deep NIL pockets and his family’s ties to the program, this weekend could realistically trigger the biggest recruiting flip of the 2027 cycle.
Jacobs is a generational athlete on the defensive line, standing at 6-foot-5 and 235 pounds. Playing for Blessed Trinity Catholic in Roswell, Georgia, he has been a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks. In his junior season alone, he racked up 16 sacks and 102 tackles. Over three varsity seasons, he’s accounted for nearly 300 total tackles. Now he’s entering his senior and final year of high school, the number’s only going to surge.

Truth be told, Mario Cristobal sees a Reuben Bain Jr. type of potential in him. Looks like they are ready to go any distance to flip him, apparently. The Hurricanes got a heavy-hitting recruiting team led by Mario Cristobal and Hall of Fame legend Jason Taylor, personally leading the charge. Interestingly, Jacobs has deep family ties to the region. He’s actually the godson of former Miami (and Georgia) head coach Mark Richt. So, safe to say, the orange and green blood runs deep in his circle.
Plus, in the last 2 years, nobody in college football has been flipping five-stars like Taylor. He has convinced some of the best high school players in the country to change their minds at the last second. As a matter of fact, Jason Taylor was the No. 1 recruiter in all of the ACC in 2024 and has a bit of bad blood with OSU. The former Miami superstar pulled five-star defensive lineman Justin Scott (class of 2024) away from Ohio State just a week before National Signing Day.
However, flipping him from Columbus is going to be a total dogfight because OSU isn’t letting go without a scrap. Word on the street is that the Buckeyes have put together a NIL package for him. Defensive line guru Larry Johnson even laid out a “transition plan” to show DJ exactly how he’ll be coached for the next three years, even if coaching changes happen.
This weekend is basically a high-stakes “litmus test” to see if Miami’s bite is as good as its bark. Since it’s a family weekend trip, if Cristobal can win over DJ’s dad, former Georgia standout David Jacobs, we might be looking at the biggest recruiting flip of the entire 2027 cycle. The college football world is watching closely to see if the nation’s top prospect stays true to his pledge or chooses a new path in South Florida.
What are the actual chances of the OSU commit flipping?
In recruiting circles, there’s a common saying: “If you’re looking, you’re committed, but you’re not signed.” When a high-profile recruit takes an official visit elsewhere, it’s a clear sign they are either having second thoughts or looking for a reason to stay closer to home.
The chances of a flip skyrocket after a visit. 8 out of 10 times, the players have already decommitted mentally, especially for the nation’s top recruits. Look no further than the recruitment of Tristan Keys, the nation’s No. 1 WR in the class of 2026. The Mississippi native committed to the Baton Rouge program for 5 months. It only took one wild weekend recruiting visit for the Tennessee Vols to lock him up.
These visits allow rival coaches to get “last licks” (giving the player a fresh vision of early playing time and better NIL deals). It’s just the nature of the recruiting cycle. The Miami Hurricanes know that better than anybody.
Hylton Stubbs, a four-star safety who was a cornerstone of Miami’s 2025 class, took a late visit to Florida in November 2024 despite being “solidly” committed to the Hurricanes. Shortly after that trip, the man decommitted and left Mario Cristobal in a panic to fill their secondary just weeks before signing day.
Well, now it’s up to Ryan Day and the mighty Buckeyes to counter whatever offer the Miami Hurricanes are laying out on the table for DJ Jacobs. Mind you, to land the last No. 1 recruit in the nation, Jackson Cantwell (class of 2026), the Hurricanes reportedly put together a $2 million-per-year NIL deal. The popular consensus is that they might cook up something very similar this time. Long story short, Ryan Day might want to pull out the checkbook and sign a counter check for DJ after his weekend visit.
