College Football is on a firing spree, and head coaching job vacancies are flooding all over. The likes of Penn State, Florida, and LSU are all in the market for a new head coach. And Ryan Day at Ohio State is someone who’s catching the eyes of these programs with the impressive work he’s done in Ohio. But OSU’s AD isn’t worried. He outlined the secret sauce behind Ryan Day’s happiness at Ohio State.

Ohio State’s Athletic Director, Ross Bjork, sat on ‘The Bobby Carpenter Show’ on 3rd November and laid out his plan for keeping Ryan Day at OSU for the foreseeable future. “How do you keep Ryan Day happy?” asked the host. Bjork outlined the “relationship” the program has built with Day and the “constant dialogue” he has with the HC.
“It goes back to the relationship piece, and that’s the constant dialogue, the constant interaction, the constant relationship building. Understanding how we are supporting the program here at Ohio State, and again, never letting off the gas pedal in terms of supporting football at the highest level,” said Bjork. It’s a recipe that has given massive dividends to Ohio State.

Under Ryan Day’s helm, Ohio State has been in the AP Top-10 in almost 99% of the games the head coach has coached. Recruiting is continuing at an elite level, with top-5 classes being the norm. Not to mention, under Day’s guidance, his players have also excelled academically. For instance, OSU recently posted a perfect multi-year APR of around 1000. All of that surely comes with other programs knocking on his door. But AD Ross Bjork still manages to keep Ryan Day put.
“At the end of the day, Coach Day and his family. They love being Buckeyes. They’ve been here a long, long time now in this world. And so, we want to keep that,” said Bjork. As for taking substantial actions, Bjork also knows how to keep Ryan Day happy financially. “We extended his contract last year. Let’s have a great start into the regular season, go into the postseason, and just make sure we have all the resources that we need to,” concluded Bjork.

Ryan Day extended his contract last year, becoming the second-highest-paid head coach in the country. It was a new 7-year deal after Ohio State’s natty win, that guaranteed Day a $12.5 million per year payout. Not just that, it also included performance bonuses, earning a whopping $1 million for his championship win. But it’s not just the financial aspect for Ryan Day. The head coach has now fully embraced Columbus.

Ryan Day’s family loves Columbus
Ryan Day was, of course, not a native of Ohio State. But the head coach had spent significant time with the B1G blueblood. Day had joined the program in 2017 as CO-OC and QBs coach and gradually rose through the program’s ranks. Meanwhile, his family also started living in Columbus, and Day has been a die-hard Buckeye ever since.
“This place is unlike any other place. It’s a great place to work. Got a great group of quarterbacks to work with here. My family loves Columbus. It’s the best place to work in America, and I really believe that. So my family loves it here, and I love it here,” said Ryan Day after becoming head coach in 2019. Over the years, Ryan Day has also contributed and has been an active part of the Columbus community.

For instance, after his contract extension this year, Ryan Day came up with a philanthropic initiative. Day, with his wife, Nina, contributed $1.4 million to OSU’s Wexner Medical Center to promote mental health. By all looks of it, Ryan Day is now a proud Buckeye, and no blueblood job will entice him. That said, what if an NFL head coaching offer lands in his pocket? That would surely test Ryan Day’s loyalties. But understandably, an NFL switch could makes sense for a college head coach’s career.
