Ohio State safety Jaylen McClain has a unique connection to defensive coordinator Matt Patricia, which started long before either of them arrived in Columbus. Patricia once coached his father, Maurice McClain, when he played free safety for Syracuse, and now he is coaching his son at the Buckeyes. McClain believes it’s a full-circle relationship, one that connects two generations of his family through the same coach.

“A real full-circle moment for me and my family,” McClain said, according to Chase Brown of Eleven Warriors.

He added that Patricia has even told him directly how much “he’s a lot like his father.”

“I’ve been hearing things about him since I was little. It’s pretty cool,” McClain said of Patricia.

Maurice McClain played free safety from 1999 to 2002, a three-time letterwinner who started every game during his senior year after coming back from a critical leg injury that threatened his career. Patricia was part of the Syracuse staff as a graduate assistant in 1999, working under current Ohio State secondary coach Tim Walton. So the same coaching tree that shaped Maurice back then has now circled around to shape his son, with Jaylen being one of the key pieces in the secondary.

Through four games in 2026, Jaylen has recorded 17 tackles (9 solo), an interception against Texas, and three pass breakups. His best performance came against Illinois, where he posted eight tackles and four pass breakups. That feat made him the first Ohio State defender to do that in a single game since 1995 and earned him Third Star of the Game honors.

With two years of eligibility remaining, this season carries weight for both his draft stock and for a defense that has leaned on him heavily as one of the most dependable players.

Jaylen McClain arrived at Ohio State as part of the 2024 recruiting class, a four-star prospect who was ranked behind several of his classmates. Still, he became the third true freshman to earn a starting role that season, playing behind Cowboys safety Caleb Downs.

When Downs left for the NFL this past spring, McClain stepped into the leadership role, following a path that mirrored his father’s journey. Maurice also battled through injury and adversity before earning a starting role of his own at Syracuse.

Patricia has praised Jaylen’s communication skills and his ability to see the field like a quarterback, along with his coverage between the corners and linebackers. For a defense trying to replace the kind of command Downs used to provide, Jaylen steps in effortlessly, proving to be a key piece on the Buckeyes’ secondary.

As for Ohio State’s defense, McClain’s steady presence matters, as the Buckeyes gave up 462 yards and nearly 200 rushing yards to Illinois this week. Despite a win, the front seven struggled to generate consistent pressure, adding extra stress on the secondary. With McClain serving as an anchor Patricia can trust, the Buckeyes’ secondary, including Earl Little Jr. and cornerbacks Jermaine Mathews Jr. and Devin Sanchez, continues to build chemistry on the defense.

Ohio State’s defense has shown real cracks through four games, surrendering big plays on the ground and failing to generate consistent pressure up front, as the same issues showed up in Texas and Illinois games.

Day has been blunt about needing more production from the defensive line, while Patricia has talked about needing total team discipline, where even one player out of position could turn against them.
