We are getting served an all-time regular season of college football where the fake teams get found out, and the contenders emerge out of nowhere. On top of that, upsets after upsets. Just in Week 8, No. 2 Miami went down to Louisville. LSU was derailed by the Commodores, and even the hype of Texas Tech got diffused by ASU. Will we see similar surprises in Week 9? Well, former Gators and Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer sure thinks so.

After their tough loss in Athens in Week 8, Lane Kiffin’s No. 8 Ole Miss is on the road again to take on the No. 13 Sooners. Brent Venables’s team bounced back with a dominant win over South Carolina after being embarrassed in the Red River showdown. Going into their Week 9 game, the Sooners are a 4.5 favorite over the Rebels. Talking about the game on his podcast with Mark Ingram II and Rob Stone, Meyer has called for an upset.

“This is one of the most intriguing games of the year because you have Charlie Weis Jr. [OC] and Lane Kiffin, two of the best offensive minds in the game, against, I think, one of the best defensive minds in the game, Brent Venables, who coached against them. I think it’s going to be phenomenal,” Meyer began on the October 22nd episode of The Triple Option show. The odds, as we noted, favor Oklahoma for the win.

But that did not stop Urban Meyer from picking Ole Miss as the victor on Saturday. His reasoning was simple. “Whoever has the ball last is going to win that game, but I take Ole Miss.”

We have been seeing a glimpse of Kiffin’s offense all season, but it came out in its entirety in the first three quarters of the Georgia game. Every time Ole Miss had the ball, they looked like they were scoring, and they did. This was away from home against Kirby Smart’s Georgia. That run stopped in the 4th quarter as the Bulldogs outscored Ole Miss 17-0 to take the lead and win the game.

The real challenge for Lane Kiffin is not Oklahoma’s offense. We already saw a first-year QB in Bryce Underwood going against the Sooners. It didn’t end well for Michigan. Oklahoma has done the same to every QB except Arch Manning in the second half of their game. To his credit, the Ole Miss head coach knows what Venables is all about. During the week, he even spoke about the excellent (and legal) manner in which Oklahoma predicts offensive signals of their opponents.

The game will come down to the QB. Not John Mateer. We are talking about Trinidad Chambliss. If he plays like his usual self, then it stands to reason that Ole Miss’s explosive offense can pierce through the Sooners’ defense.

How does Urban Meyer-backed Ole Miss fare against the ‘mighty’ Oklahoma?

From a neutral standpoint, the game could go either way. Both teams are top sides in the SEC and are competing for a playoff spot. Ole Miss lost last weekend, but it was a neck-to-neck matchup, which they bottled in the second half. But even the best teams lose, and it was their first of the season, so Lane Kiffin can look past the game.

But he will have to make sure that the same does not repeat against Oklahoma, who look much more dangerous than Georgia at this moment. If the Bulldogs can score on every possession against them, then best believe Oklahoma is more than capable of doing it. Their ace QB, John Mateer, is a dangerous factor that Ole Miss has to look out for. Despite still recovering from his hand injury, he shone against South Carolina last week. He completed 18 out of 26 throws for 150 yards and had 1 TD.

If given a chance, Mateer can lead his team to a victory. Oklahoma does not heavily rely on its defense alone. Its offense has been a major factor in its success as well. So, that is something Lane Kiffin and his men have to keep in mind.
