Just days after Mike Gundy’s 21-year run in Stillwater came to an abrupt end, the Cowboys are facing the fallout every struggling program dreads: key players heading for the exits. Starting offensive lineman Noah McKinney has entered the transfer portal, using the NCAA’s 30-day window that opens following a head coach’s dismissal. The 6-foot-4, 330-pound right guard has started five games this season and ranks among Oklahoma State’s top performers in pass protection, boasting an 82.7 PFF grade, the second-best on the team. “I know they changed the rule, but we get grandfathered into the old system. Going in now gives me the best opportunity to take advantage of the time and figure out what teams are interested in me,” remarked McKinney. And that interest is already sky-high, with over 15 programs from the SEC, ACC, Big Ten, and Big 12 reportedly reaching out.

From the SEC, Ole Miss, Kentucky, and Texas A&M are in the mix. In the ACC, FSU, SMU, NC State, Virginia, and Wake Forest have expressed interest. Then the Big 12 has UCF, Utah, Baylor, Arizona, and more, all in the chase. Meanwhile, the B1G isn’t sitting idle. Michigan State, Illinois, and Maryland have made their calls.
Now, while losing McKinney would sting for Oklahoma State, Baylor could put him to good use next year. The Frisco, Texas native is practically in their backyard. Safe to say it is within Baylor’s recruiting territory. Moreover, the Bears are bracing for turnover in the trenches with 3 starters set to graduate. Now, while McKinney checks many boxes, Baylor will definitely give its best shot to land him. But what can Oklahoma State face now?

Losing a starting OL could be a setback for Oklahoma State
Noah McKinney wasn’t just another body on the line. In a season (1-5) full of turbulence, his consistency became a rare comfort for the Cowboys. But now, with his name officially in the transfer portal, Oklahoma State faces a massive gap.

McKinney’s decision makes sense from his side. But losing him is not only a loss in production but also in leadership. After transferring from UNLV, he became one of the Cowboys’ most dependable linemen in pass protection, per PFF. This season, McKinney didn’t allow a single pressure in 78 snaps against Baylor. Now, he’s looking to use his final season to elevate his game in a new program.
For Oklahoma State, with Mike Gundy gone and the program in transition, McKinney’s exit feels symbolic of an uncertain era in Stillwater. Because the Cowboys aren’t just rebuilding a coaching staff, they’re fighting to keep their best players from walking out the door. But the end of this season will reveal where things truly stand.
