When you ask about the best college football rivalry, many will say Ohio State-Michigan or Alabama-Auburn. But real college football fans know what we are talking about. It is the Red River Rivalry between the Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns. This year’s Red River Rivalry game might not have stood up to its standard, but it definitely stood for its chaos. The Texas Longhorns entered this game somewhat favored, despite playing poorly in the last couple of games. A lot of Midwest folks bet their houses on the Sooners to get it done, regardless of John Mateer playing or not beforehand. However, when everybody counted Texas out, the Longhorns decided to pull their best win of the season against the No. 6 ranked Oklahoma Sooners. This win not only allowed them to retain the Golden Hat trophy but also brought a crazy level of disrespect that even had Pat McAfee absolutely shocked.

The unranked Texas Longhorns pulled off a clean 23-6 victory. After the win, the Longhorns had a field day throwing digital and actual haymakers at the Boomers. Right after the game, Texas’ official X account took trolling to the next level, going to the Sooners’ IG and reporting them for pretending to be a good football team. That type of trolling had Pat McAfee going “Holy shit” on his X.

Pat McAfee and Nick Saban had picked the Sooners to win this game. Even legends, once in a while, will take a loss. Props also need to go to Texas’ social media interns and executives. This is just a petty level. The Longhorns-Sooners took their beef to the atrocious level. Last season, when Texas beat the Sooners 34-3, CJ Vogel posted a clip of Texas Longhorns Anthony Hill Jr. and Barryn Sorrell getting back at Baker Mayfield by putting his Sooners jersey in the middle of the field and planting a Longhorns flag on it.
That was very petty and disrespectful, but somewhat understandable. In their defense, Baker Mayfield did it first — and even better. In 2017, after Oklahoma beat Ohio State, quarterback Baker Mayfield ran to the middle of the field and pretended to plant an OU flag on Ohio State’s logo. He did it because he was excited and remembered Ohio State celebrating on Oklahoma’s field the year before.

Although Baker Mayfield is absolutely balling in Tampa, the Sooners have been paying for Baker Mayfield’s sins ever since. Every time a big-time team pulls off a win against the Sooners, they either rush to the field to plant their college flag or do something petty like trolling on social media, to some crazy extent.
How did the Longhorns pull off the victory?
Despite playing poor defense in their last two games, the Longhorns’ defense held Oklahoma to a single-digit score and forced key turnovers, including 2 picks. The defense literally derailed John Mateer’s Johnny Manziel-type performance. But you need to give this man a break. John Mateer looked rusty returning from a hand injury and threw 2 interceptions right before halftime.

Oklahoma somehow managed to kick two field goals to take a slim 6-3 lead entering halftime. But the second half was all Texas. Arch Manning and the Longhorns put together a 74-yard touchdown drive on the very first drive of the second half. Arch Manning found DeAndre Moore Jr. for a 12-yard touchdown pass. That was the turning point for the Longhorns.
From that moment on, Texas didn’t look back. In the fourth quarter, with the Longhorns holding a modest lead, Ryan Niblett took a punt return 75 yards for a game-sealing touchdown. With this win, Texas improves its record to 4–2 and sends a clear message to the rest of the SEC that they are still a force to be reckoned with. With this victory, the Longhorns will be back in the AP Poll like they never left.
