The most viewed college football regular season show – College GameDay – would not be what it is without Pat McAfee‘s insights—at least, that is what most people think. The former West Virginia punter turned sports analyst got stuck in limbo regarding his appearance on ESPN’s flagship show in June 2024, and the air around it still hasn’t cleared.

In a recent conversation with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s head coach Bill Belichick, McAfee dropped a bomb, partly hinting at his return and party confusing fans once again! “Is GameDay gonna be there, Pat?” Belichick bluntly hurled the question at McAfee. The analyst replied: “I don’t make those decisions, but I would love to, would love to be there though…” He quickly changed the topic and ended the conversation without providing any further updates. Sure, it seems he wants to come back. But then again, it would be unfair to conclude anything at this point.

ESPN’s GameDay is a weekly, 3-hour television program. The hosts travel to various college venues to discuss highly anticipated matchups. The show covers College football in the fall. In the winter, they shift focus to college basketball. Fans widely know GameDay for entertaining them with creative signs and flags. Lee Corso wearing an oversized mascot head as he picks the winner of the matchup during the show’s grand finale is another fan-favorite moment of the show.

ESPN Network chief Burke Magnus, in a June 2024 interview with The Athletic, said, “I presume he will,” when asked about McAfee’s return to College GameDay. The confusion regarding the sports analyst’s appearance on the gameshow occurred in the first place because ESPN had not signed any contract with McAfee.

In Burke’s defense, he said it’s common in the sports industry to not bound people with pen-paper contracts. He added McAfee is also a king of his own will and doesn’t like to be “handcuffed” by any signatures. “I think from time to time, Pat likes to just muse on what he may or may not want to do,” said Burke, leaving the question of his appearance on College GameDay’s season 2025 open-ended. But why did McAfee step down from GameDay in the first place?

Controversy around Pat McAfee’s presence in College GameDay

Pat McAfee cleared his stance regarding his hesitation in signing a contract to appear on College GameDay with an X post in 2023. He retweeted The Athletic senior writer Chris Vannini’s post, which displayed the results of a survey of 3000+ fans regarding McAfee’s presence in the game show. The polls reflected that only 30% of the correspondents liked McAfee’s commentary on College GameDay. While 21% didn’t have any opinion, the majority, 49%, said they didn’t like him on the legendary game show.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Pat McAfee's energy a breath of fresh air or a distraction on College GameDay?

Have an interesting take?

Replying to this X post, McAfee said he had “some great news” for the majority. He declared that he won’t be signing a contract with College GameDay any further, as he doesn’t deem himself fit to serve the “distinguished” College Football folks. Note the sarcasm. Ahem.

Vannini cited some of the differing comments made by fans on his X post. Some said, “I don’t watch GameDay anymore solely because of Pat McAfee,” while others penned, “I think Pat McAfee adds a great energy to GameDay, and I don’t understand the hate for him at all.”

Since this day, McAfee has not cleared his stance on signing any official document with College GameDay. Maybe it’s time for another poll to understand the buzz among presence for the 2025 season. The ESPN game show has been bringing adept analysts like the ex-Alabama head coach and NCAA-record 7-time national champion Nick Saban alongside Kirk Herbstreit, Rece Davis, Lee Corso, and Desmond Howard. A signed contract between the gameshow and McAfee would still provide relief to the network, as it must balance entertainment and analysis for College GameDay.
